"Assist feeding" results.

rainbowsrus Mar 06, 2006 05:13 PM

As promised, I thought I'd let y'all know how the assist feeding went.

For those who didn't see the original post, (and also for those with a momory like mine) I had 3 problem feeder BRB babies last year, not bad out of 136 total but still a PITA to deal with. One was born in August and the other two in October. Of the three only one had ever eaten on it's own and that was only once. In January this year I began assist feeding them. Basically open their mouths (playing card works pretty good) insert food part way, let the brb swallow prey. I even chased the first with a second a few times - insert second prey item as the feet of the first go in mouth.

I've hed great results. The two born in October fed this way several times then got the idea and have taken their last few meals with no help from me. The stubborn one from my August 21st litter took a little more work. He was the one I had to have stuffed in more thn half way or he'd spit it out. Last week he also took his first unassisted prey.

Hoping this will be all behind them now, they look soooooo much better. They weren't bad looking before just skinny with nothing in their stomaches. No they have the plump in the middle look all the rest had. Still WAY smaller then their siblings, I believe that's to be expected.

Thanks,
