Hondo Breeding Question

billstevenson Mar 06, 2006 06:05 PM

I have a nice pair of hypo tangerines I like to breed this season. They came out of brumination in mid-Feburary, and are in blue now. Whats the collective thinking; put them together now or wait for the next shed?

Well Bill according to Mr. Dunham of Albino Tricolors most Hondurans copulate after their second shed. But if your female is'nt up to the correct weight (at least 400 grams) you should wait until after her third post brumation shed.
If you can, please post some pics?

Thanks for the input. The female is a tank. So,I can't see any harm in trying the two this time. If there is no interest, I'll try after second shed. I'll get some pics up after the pair sheds in a few days.

It won't do any harm to put them together and see what happens. I introduce females to males throughout the year, but typically do not see breeding until after the second or third shed. I have had several Hondos shed this year, but they were not pursued by males.

I have also noticed that even after the second or third shed, they do not immediately breed, but often wait a few days. This is another reason why I think it's a good idea to introduce animals several times through the year.
