For Nighthawk_, some answer...

to your questions you;ve been asking:

Personally, I'd remove all lights and use only an under tank heater. Leos are noctural. Ambient lighting in a room is plenty of light. Heat is another matter. Heating with an under tank heater fixes that problem and makes them more comfortable. In the wild leos live in rock piles and large rock outcroppings. During the day they wedge themselves into cracks and deep crevices where the temps will stay between 80 and 82 and the humidity will be somewhere in the 60-80% range. They leave these hideouts when the sun goes down and the rocks are still at about 120 degrees F to warm up and get their body to a good operating temperature. Then they hunt... and then return to the rocks for a last heat soak before returning to their hide areas. They do NOT live on sand. They see fine dust scattered on rocks and stuff where they pick up minerals but any sand they encounter is merely in hunting and in moving from rock pile to rock pile in search of more food, humidity, better hiding places, etc. They may get impacted in the wild from any encounters with sand, but its almost a certainty to happen if kept on the stuff 24/7 in captivity, whether that takes 2 weeks or 10 years. Impaction happens through instant or slow buildup of foreign materials in the intestines. Think about what sand does when exposed to water.. it clumps.. naturally.. this same thing would be happening in your leos stomach. Nor are the calci-sand or vitasand brands digestable at all. They do the same thing..and worse encourage the leos to eat the substrate for minerals. You want a safe and good looking substrate use slate or ceramic tiles from home depot or a home supply place.

Keeping their humidity up is a good idea. They may be desert creatures but they're thin skinned and can dehydrate easily if given improper conditions. A humidity of 75% is actually a very good thing for them. If you observe leos in very low humidity situations, they spend a lot of time inside a humid hide. Humid hides are generally 95% and above in terms of humidity levels. Keeping reptiles hydrated and properly supplemented are 2 of the most important husbandry keys in the hobby.

Thanks! Where can I get a humid hide? Or how can I keep the humidity in her tank up? Also, an under tank heater, I should only keep about half the tank heated, right?

If you're using a 10g tank you should get one of the undertank heaters marked for a 10 g tank. I use 10-15 gallon UTH's for 38qt sterlite containers to house my duos/trios. My room is always warm anyway so thats all it takes to give them a nice hot spot and then a cool hide spot on the end as well. You can raise humidity by either using plastic housing or covering the screen of an aquarium. Making a humid hide is as simple as taking a butter dish, cutting a hole near the bottom with a small lip, wetting down 4 or 5 papertowels and folding them into the bottom of the butter dish. Do a search on some Leopard gecko caresheets and ignore anything about using sand/any particulate substrate (Gravel, sand, rocks, reptile carpet etc etc)Most sheets have the temps right save for a hot spot for them.. When I removed the lights from my leos I saw an amazing improvement in both health and activity as well as weight gain, food consumption, breeding, etc. So now all the light they have is ambient from my room lights for a day/night cycle. I mist my leos down every other night for humidity reasons to keep it up..I use a pressure sprayer for the misting. Some of them even drink directly from the spray... Its rather funny.

Thanks again! I'll go tomorrow and get an undertank heater. Any brand you recomend? And about the humidity, you just mist the entirety of the inside of the tank? How heavily? And do you change the papertowels at the bottom after?

Lucien Mar 06, 2006 10:18 PM

Its about a 5 second burst of misting from the pressure sprayer... and then I leave it alone... no changing of papertowels. If you're gonna change it do it before. Undertank heaters I just use an off brand.. whatever I happen to come across in my local petshop. You can use human heating pads that don't have an automatic on/off switch too if you like and just set it on medium. Works perfect usually.

Thanks. I got the under tank heater, but on the bag, it says to use like 1 1/2 inches of substreight to avoid burns...What do I do? =0

Whats up nighthawk!

If your useing papertowels as a substrate i would advise going to homedepot and getting a lamp dimmer switch. You can usually find them in the lamp and ceiling fan section hanging on a clip or there also by the electrical light switches. The UTH actually plugs into the dimmer switch, the whole thing is manual so you will have to keep an eye on the heat and adjust it as necassary. If you plug in your heater without one, monitor the temp on the ground were your gecko is actually going to be laying with a tempgun or with a probe and see how hot it gets. If it gets to hot then definitly use a dimmer switch or buy a thermostat for the UTH.
