nelsons shedding to soon.....

adamjeffery Mar 06, 2006 07:30 PM

a little background first.... i got a albino nelsons a few weeks ago and i found that it had mites so i got rid of the mites, and a few days after that she went into shed. the shed was a very problematic one and i had to basically shed the skin for her(i had to start it and remove 50% of it or so)she has since eatin like a pig and 2 weeks later is going in to blue again. i know this is not normal for healthy snakes but i was wondering if it had to do with the mites? or if she is just growing faster. thanks for your help

I have had snakes shed right after they had just shed. I'm not sure why it happens, but it has happened. All of my seem very healthy. This happened last year to a couple of my snakes, and I have not had a problem with them. None of my snakes have ever had mites, so I imagine that they shed quickly for another reason. If it is eating and pooping normally, I would't worry about it. I'm sure it will be fine. Derek

if its eating like a pig then its probably growing quickly. How old is the snake? I've had yearling nelson's shed every three weeks or so when they are eating alot. I don't think its uncommon for young snakes to shed that often if they are eating alot.

Good luck.

she is an 05 for sure she is still small probaly about 10-12 inces at most. the mites are gone i just thought maybe the mites may have triggered the first shed and then she shed on her own the second time. i just dont want her stressing out.

im not a vet,but i have had snakes in less than ideal health-skin issues;slight scale rot to be specific-do the same...it is a good thing,it's their body just responding in it's own way to heal itself, even more so than just a fast growth issue...for this upcoming shed,i would suggest misting it good every other day,or better yet as soon as her eyes clear up-which is at least a day or two before she actually sheds-put a container(soft butter/gladware/etc) with a hole in the lid, filled with moist sphagnum moss, into her enclosure...she will likely curl up in there to obtain proper hydration,at least for a while...another thing i have done sometimes is palce a slightly damp(wet, then wrung out well) cloth towel over the cage top(if it's a screen top)...all three tips i mentioned together may be a little over kill, but 2 of the three should do it.i would suggest the moisture/hide cup as a pemanent fixture in there(milks like that type of thing)....a brief(15 min) soak in 80 degree or so water (does not feel as warm as you'd think) can help, but don't stress it out by making the water too deep, just enough to go halfway up her body,is good also.
