Not sure if he is ok ( 1 week old BD)

breakfastatme Jul 27, 2003 10:22 PM

I have a 1 week old BD whose looks as if he is the runt. I have seperated him so I can get him extra attention. What can I do for him? My first tiny baby BD and maybe I am getting worried for no reason.

Captive breed
Pastel
he is this long I-------------I from tip of nose to end of tail.
He looks healthy but is much less active then the others.
Will a 1 week old drink on his own?
Eat pin heads on his own?
should I try to feed him vegies yet?

Thank you in advance!!!

Sure he should eat and drink actually he has to start to eat and drink. Water should be misted on the head with a spray bottle. Mine drink better this way and never have from a bowl. Pin heads should be the right size for him, he needs to start to eat. Are the temps, and lights, and the enclosure correct?

Mystical Dragons

if he seems weak and not eating on his own you could try some baby parrot formula and pedialyte, it can help jump start the little guys, i have used it for 2 dragons and it worked very well. You can get Kaytee handfeeding formula at your local petco and the pedialyte at the market, just mix it as directed substituting the water for the pedialyte. But like asked be sure to check your temps ect (105-115 basking / 85 ambient cool side temps). If you do feed this formula i suggest little but often especially to start out, you can use an eyedropper or syringe (without the needle) or if you have nothing else they usually will lap it off a spoon, they really like it (my 7 year old cockatoo still loves to be handfed the stuff )I hope this helps a bit, bare in mind also that some do not start eating till a few days to a week after hatching as they are still absorbing the rest of what food they received in the egg,the yolk sustains them for awhile after hatching, but if he looks weak and is on the small side the formula is a good idea.
