Health Problem??

ChadKitt Mar 06, 2006 10:47 PM

I have a young egyptian uromastyx(approx 8 months). When he deficated today along with his normal feces there was a puddle of fluid. What sort of problem is this? He has done it once before, but still exhibits no other signs of sickness maintaining a healthy appetite. He is fed a mix of greens including turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens, peas, and corn supplemented with Flukers vitamin spray and Juvenile iguana vitamin supplement calcium. I also feed a dry juvenile iguana food in a seperate dish. There is no exotic vets in my area so I am looking for advice and info.

Thanks

did he have barrel shape poop that was accompanied by a clear liquid? or was it one big runny gooey thing?

sometimes when uros have more water than they need, they release it when they go to the bathroom. helga was nice enough to do that on my bed once.

however if the poop wasn't a good shape and was gooey, it could be signs of parasites.

i hope that helped some

a healthy uro's excrement should not only be barrel shaped and accompanied by a puddle of heavy liquid, it should be green, with one white segment. stinky excrement is another sign of parasites.

My uro has had stinky excrement before but not this time. He is having barrel shaped poop but it is coming with the puddle, which would point to the passing of extra water. However since he has had stimky ones before I am worried about parasites. What can be done with parasites, is there any medicine tbat I can obtain, or should I wait it out? I need help.

Thankyou all for the help.

Normal feces does have an odor, especially when fresh. If the odor is strong and foul, that's where the trouble may lie. It never hurts to get a fresh sample to your reptile vet to check for parasites.

many vets now seem to say some parasites are not harmful... it depends on how loaded it's gut is, what exactly the bugs are, and if the uro has any symptoms.
you have to get a fresh fecal sample to the vet and have it tested, then the vet will advise you how to proceed with medication.
you cannot proceed with treatment without an inital vet visit.
fecal tests are not expensive, although i don't know any vets who will do just a fecal without ever having examined the animal.

My current and previous vets do, but maybe I just got lucky.

they will give you dosages of meds without *ever* having seen the animal? That's pretty surprising. You probably have a good relationship with the vet. There is less of a risk for animal doctors, if they prescribe too much meds for the weight of the animal, and the animal dies, or vets don't get sued for malpractice.

Yep - they know me well enough. I just provide them with the fecal sample and a weight in grams from that day. They haven't ever had a problem with that. Of course, on the uncommon occasion that there's something more serious wrong than a suspected pinworm infestation, I bring the whole lizard in!
