How much pattern is OK in a Snow baby?

sacredpurr Mar 07, 2006 08:31 AM

I have a Hypo x snow female she is 3 months. She is in shed in the pictures but now I am confused. She is a light grey pattern on white with striped nails. The hypo I was told was Leucy but not sure now. Please tell me about the snows and is the pattern there when they are young and can it go away as they get older? I'd love to see Photos of snows at her age to adult. Thanks Db

i can't speak from experience as i have never had a snow dragon, but what i've read is that they get white with age. I also think that it depends on mood and surrounding temperature. if it is cold, the dragon is going to do all it can to absorb more light by getting darker.

Snows get lighter with each shed as they mature. By 18 months most are white with silver/gray markings or completely white. Our stud this year, Cornelius, looked similar to your little one at that age. You can see him at our site.

Your female looks like what they call a Snow in the Dragon World, but to me they look like they do not have any red pigment, so would be an Anerythristic Dragon. The Leucistics in the Dragon World are not Leucistics at all. They appear to not have any red pigment either with clear nails. This would make them a Hypo(Clear Nails) Snow (Hypo/Anery)

If my observations are correct, when you breed a Leucistic (Clear Nail/Anery) X Snow (Anery) you will produce exactly what you got. An Anery het Clear Nails. Or in Dragon Language a Snow het Leucistic. It seems like what you were told about your dragons parents was true, because if it was just a Hypo(Clear Nails) X Snow breeding, they would have produced Normals double het for Anery and Clear Nails.

I think as far as pattern on a Snow Dragon (Anery) it would depend on how much black pigment is in the line and also red pigment. The black pigment or lack of will show itself. If an Anery comes from a very red line, then when the red is removed by the Anery gene, the dragon will be very light if it is also from a line with very little black pigment.
