mali uro goes nuts!!!! help please!!

awnings1988 Mar 07, 2006 10:51 AM

I HAVE A MALI URO FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS HE IS IN MY OFFICE AND FOR A FEW MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR HE OR SHE IS BASICALLY BY ITSELF. EVERYTHING IS ON TIMERS AND IT HAS A HUGE ENCLOSURE. 72X28X18 I HAVENT TAKEN IT OUT IN MONTHS BUT LIKE I SAID I COME IN TWICE A WEEK TO CHECK ON HE OR SHE AND FEED IT. I ALSO NOTICED IT SLEEPING ALOT DURING THE WINTER BUT TODAY WHEN I OPENED HER CAGE I TRYED TO SPRAY HER WITH A VITAMIN SPRAY AND IT WENT CRAZY. RAN FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER AND EVEN CHARGED ME WITH ITS MOUTH OPENED. THEN IT WAS RUBBING ITS STOMOUCH AND THE BEDDING AND HUFFUING AND PUFFING. PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME WHATS WRONG?

what's wrong is you are using all caps, and it literally hurts the brain to read that post. please stop.

Are you saying you feed it only TWICE A WEEK (caps definitely needed)?? And then you go & blast it with an external supplement spray, whatever that is? And you have to ask the forum why your Uro is carrying on in such a way? I have to wonder what other things are askew with your lizard care.

As you may have noticed, there are a few obvious things wrong with your set-up, compared to what we as a forum recommend. Not everyone feeds their Uro everyday, and I have even on a very occasional basis left mine for a weekend, but feeding only twice a week does seem extreme. Do you have an pictures of your Uro?

By scraping her stomach, do you mean making kind of a snake like "S" dance? If you do, then this is a sign of aggression, when coupled with the hissing, and open mouth. They also do this to get comfortable, but you can tell the difference.

My immediate guess, as the others have voiced, is that she has become unacclimated to your presence, and when you walked in and sprayed her she took it as an attack. If you think about it from her point of view I am sure you can see how that mistake could be made.

In general, the use of things like vitamin sprays is suspect, unless you are extremely careful with their usage, though some vitamin and calcium supplement is a very good idea. Just to make sure that their are not additional issues, what are your tank basking temp, high ambient temp, and low ambient temp? How many hides does she have? What type of substrate do you use? Does she have access to a full spectrum light within 12 inches? These things will all help us help you help her.

Additionally, as Robyn pointed out, when interacting with online forums capital letters signifiy yelling, and since most of us spend a considerable amount of time on the computer it really is physically painful to try to read a post in all caps. Not everyone realizes this, but now you know.

If you are really interested in helping your little uro friend have the best life possible, which is seems you are since she has such a phenomenally large cage, this forum is an excellent resource with many people who have extensive experience.

Welcome to the forum.

well i thank you for that as the other person sort of pissed me off! i take very good care of what i keep. i only fed twice a week for several winter months only and also due to the fact that t wasnt eating much any how. i thank you for pointing things out to me and about the caps thing(lol) but as far as me spraying the stuff i didnt do it the first time i seen her it was later on. i am going to post a pic or two of the setup and he does have high temps in the basking end around 110 and uvb lighting also on the other end repti sun 10.0 i do feed everyday in the spring and summer. but this action from him was even before i tryed to spray. i guess its from not really seeing me for all day periods? i will just let him be for now and hopefully he will readjust to everything. again thanks for your reply. i am posting some pics.

Although I'm aghast that you only feed your uro twice a week, you obviously want to help since you posted here, I'm not going to kick you while you are down. Still, FEED YOUR URO MORE OFTEN! (Yes, I think caps are apporiate.)

At any rate, I don't know that I can personally help, but if you post some pics of not only your uro, but your tank as well, that might help some of the more knowlegable people to guide you in the right direction.
