Hi everyone. Shadow is nearing the end of her Quarentine and everything has been spot on. She had a few mites withc I believe are gone now. I notice everytime she exhales its like her nose is pluged. Every now and then maybe even a bubble coming from her nose. Also she is or I might say was the gentelest snake I had but today she hissed at me when I picked her up. I am not worried about the hissing but we use to be able to darn near kiss her on the lips, Today when ever I would touch the top of her head she would open her mouth as if saying go ahead and move that finger closer. Any insight on these 2 problems would be great. I am not worried about this suden onslought of agresion but more worried about the nose. However I do know that suden agresion can mean other things are going wrong with her so HELP!!! Thanks a million

Respiratory Illness
Many respiratory illnesses can be treated and prevented by maintaining correct husbandry. A clean, stress-free home with warm temperatures will do much to keep your snake happy and healthy. If your snake does acquire a respiratory illness, the signs will be very noticeable: coughing, wheezing, open mouth breathing, runny nose, clicking noises when it breathes, and lethargy. If you suspect a respiratory infection, immediately raise the enclosure's temperature to 85 degrees F to help stimulate immune response. If it isn't already, move the enclosure to a quiet room, and away from any other healthy reptiles. Many times, this is all that is needed to battle minor RI's. If after two days you don't see any signs of improvement, or sooner if condition worsens, make an appointment with a reptile vet. They may prescribe antibiotic injections and/or vitamin supplements.

Where i got this info

Just keep the temp warm, and if it doesnt go away in a day or so, go to the vet. best of luck

Ok so now I have day time temps at 85F all the way at eh back of the cage and right at the light its now 120F Please see the image below. My lights are facing sidways they are not on the top of the enclosure. Shadow seems to like it on the hot side as she spends a lot of time in front of the lights. You will also note there is 1/4 wire between her and the light so she cant get burned. My night time temps are About 80F furthest away from the lights and right at the light the temp is 115F. That should be ok huh? I know the 120 day and 115 night is fairly hot but keep in mind she can excape to 85 day and 80 night temps if the higher are to high. One other thing. She isnt sneezing or weezing or brithing with opend mouth or anything. Every now and then while holding her I may hear a little click from the nose or see a little bubble pop from one of her nostrals. Its hard to explain unless you see it but the mouth opening I think is more of an agresion behavoir. She will slightly open her mouth showing her teeth if I touch her head light peting from between the eyes moving back. Today is however the first time she has ever done this. Normaly you can like I said give her a big kiss on the lips and she wouldnt even flinch. Maybe I kissed her to much? LOL Anyway thanks a million, let me know if those temps sound good.

a snake should should not have to "escape" to get to 85F.

So then that being said you are saying 85 day and 80 night with 120 day and 115 directly under the light is to hot? What should the cool side be? I can lower the watage of the bulbs to lower the temps all over the enclosure

Please also understand the word was used looly. Its not like she is rubing on the walls trying to get out. Seem apears very comforitable in her enclosure. God knows its better than the one I took her out of.

True she has not shed since I purchased her. I still dont see how though, I can see streching her mouth to loosen skin but she only dose in when I touch her head. Do you think an upcoming shed could/would cause a nasal discharge? BTW I have observed her every day since I purchased her and she has yet to go blue.

when a snake goes into shed, the entire body is affected. this includes the area inside the nose. therefore, it is difficult to breathe which explains the slightly opened mouth and breathing noises. basically, they have a clogged up (somewhat) nose and they are having to breathe through their mouths to get adequate air. while im not too sure about discharge (didnt reacll any mention of that in the posts) it could be just water unless it is of a milky/other color. but hey, no harm in taking it to the vet. if you recently got it im sure it could stand to be dewormed and given a check-up.
