Snake size and tank question size

Lia Mar 07, 2006 01:15 PM

Hi
When I first got my corn he was tiny . I put him in a 10 gallon tank with hide areas thick branches and heat on one side.
He is now about an inch longer than the tank when he is stretched. I had originally purchased a 20 gallon long tank for him when I first got him but since he was so tiny I put him in a 10 gallon.
I want to place him in the 20 long now which is 10 inches longer than the 10 gallon . My mom thinks its a bit to soon as he is very happy eats great and seems to enjoy his tank and again I have thick branches.she thinks he will be "unhappy" with the change.
This might sound strange but is it okay to just put him in the 20 long now ?
From my understanding when the snake is a bit longer than the tank its time to switch? I have the 20 long so its no big deal but he does seem happy in the 10 but I would like to upgrade his tank now but could wait till summer is over.
Any input?
Thanks

Its up to you. Your snake will be just as happy as long as he has shelter and feels safe, and has food and water.

Well, Hope is 10" longer than her tank and she is still perfectly content.... It is time for her to move up. I will be putting her in her 4' cage before too soon.

Right now he is in an eating frenzy has been eating great average 2 hoppers every few days so going to put him in the 20 long in a couple weeks, I think it will be nice to see him roam and climb in more room I dont think he will be stressed by it.
My mom treats that snake like he will get stressed by anything but she doesnt know and I imagine he will enjoy the room since summer is coming.

he'll be fine. i have a baby butter motley that is so restless i put him in a bigger tank weeks ago. he is very active. just have lots of hiding spots. i have like 3 or 4 in with my butter.

I intend to put him in after he digests his last meal which was a mouse yesterday.
I enjoy watching him climb so added some more thick branches to the 20 long. You keep 4 corns together?
I read its fine aslong as fed seperate. Do they get a long any problems? I plan to house mine in time in a 55 gallon with branches as adult and if decide to get one of those larger acrylic cages will house a m/f .
Thats the problem with corns just to many colors lol and seems every 2 years a new color .

thanks

You don't give the size of your snake, but if it's an '05, mine are all 3 still in individual 5 gallons, have plenty of room, and are happy/content. Eventually I'll move them up. My corn is about 19 inches and my milk about 15 inches. I haven't measured the king snake yet, but I'm guessing 14-15 inches.

He is roughly 21 to 22 inches . I say this because a 10 gallon is 20 inches long and when he stretches he is just an inch or 2 longer than the tank. Either way he is going in the 20 long as soon as he digests his last hopper.
The tank was actually bought from the beginning but I read they do better in smaller tank as a baby and since had the 10 gallon screen lid from yrs ago bought the 10 gallon to.
He is active at night and want to see him climb (he has branches in the 10 but only 2 thick ones).
My moms "paranoia" that he would be stressed made me unsure but after reading the info here know he will be ok. Probably will put him in 20 this weekend .
Than will posts pics he is an albino purchased from Corn utopia eats great and a very docile.
Probably get another one this summer lol not sure of color .

thanks
