Another Sexing question

nymph Mar 07, 2006 04:35 PM

Ok, well I almost have everything perfect for thier set up. I have 2 new baby leos and I have a question about sexing them. I know how to sex adults but how can you tell on babies?? I got them from a reptile show, and the breeders said that my jungle is a girl, but the other one not so sure.. How and when should I be able to tell?? He said there were 4 pores not six, so it could go either way?? I looked and don't see anything, so is it then a girl?? Looks smooth and no bumps, but at this age, is it to soon???? Thanks a lot for any help!!!

well we need to know how old they are first. but it all depends on the gecko, how fast they grow and what not, sometimes it can look like a girl then later change to a guy and vise versa. you can probably tell at about 20-25 grams. if you posted some pictures someone may be able to tell you.

Looking at the pores with the naked eye on babies won't work. Use a magnifying glass that's x15-x30. Within those strengths you should be able to tell if they are pores or just dents. Dents or nothing = female, actual pores = males. But they have to be about 10-15 grams with the manifying glass.

Thanks, I will try to post pics!!!! And get a mag glass. I hope its a boy. I want a boy and a girl. I would like to study up and try to breed at least once, and I would keep the babies.

i hope you know you could end up with as many as 20 babies just from one breeding, it all varies on the female however.

Well, the breeders I got them from said that if I wasn't going to breed and sell at the shows then he would buy them from me, if I don't want to keep them all, but knowing me, I'll end up not wanting to sell them. Anyway, I want to try to breed. I want to specialize in only one or two different things though because I think when people do to many and don't have the right help, it tends to be less rewarding. I would do it for the love of it anyway not the money. Even if I just break even that is good enough for me. But I have myself my husband, my parents and my two brothers who would like to help with this. So one or two shouldn't be to difficult. I think for now, I would like to do gecko's and Veiled chams. I really want to get a uroplatus fimbriatus, just for me. Not to breed, but I am studying up to make sure that I have the correct set up and knowledge. So I may as well get the more expensive dimmer!! Since the geckos are babies I have a long time to study up and perfect enclosures, and make sure I am ready. My veiled is a baby too. I have a pic of him, but not the geckos yet!!

i am glad to hear you are not too young like i was. am 18 and living on my own and have a hard time with all the money. that is the only reason that i posted the previous message to warn you. i cant remember at the moment if i said i started off with 2 geckos and ended up with 23 but i did and now i have to be very carefull how i spend my money. on top of that i have to balance work and school. its kinda hard, o well. welcome to the real world i guesse.. i was in such a hurry to move out haha o well at least i got all the geckos and stuff i wanted that my parents wouldnt let me have. haha

Yeah, I know how you fell about that one. I am married now and have my own daughter but my mother still always picks at me for what we spend money on. I am 26, so I guess it never ends... but I have a baby so I understand, parents never stop worrying.
