Veils and carnivorous plants question

captotterboy Mar 07, 2006 08:24 PM

ok, not that i would, but just in case i was so inclined, i just figured id ask. The worst think that could happen is someone asking "what the hell are you thinking?"

i dont know if anyone has ever asked this before, but what carnivorous plants are veils compatable with? Will they eat the plants? will the plants make them sick?

I figure a sundew or two might control any small insects that might get into the cage as well as help to clean up any uneaten food bugs

Also, a nice asian picther plant might create a nice climbing vine as well as having the advatages listed above.

Might they even control the evil MITES... that would be nice, wouldnt it?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff

Funny you should ask that... I have 2.3 Veileds (and other cham species)and raise CP's as well. I never thought about putting the two together, and actually gave a friend of mine a couple of my Nepenthes to put with his montane species. (He's extremely knowlegable of all herps; has owned a successful, popular herp store for 15 years and raises montane chams for his own personal hobby) Unfortunately, they all died.
My chams and CP's do share the basic requirements for keeping them all alive and thriving, but since they would never share the same space in nature, I've never attempted to acclimate or introduce one to the other.
CP's are bog plants, chams are arboreal. The two MAY co-habitate in their natural enviroment, but the hobbyist could not reconstuct the environment to sustain both sucessfully.
I currently raise approximately 23 different North American pitchers, dews and droseras.. and a host of others including Cephalotus and Heliamphora's. (If you know your CP's you know what I'm talking about!)
I'm always eager to speak to another CP grower, as we are rare! Post again!

neat that you raise all of those! CP (though really IP - insectivorous are very cool. There is a prof at the local University who has a slew of them in his greenhouse. When I lived in Boston I volunteered at New England Wild Flower Society for years and the "garden" - in the woods - had many of our natives in the bog area. I took a cool pic of a stand of Sarracenia that someone bought at a photo contest it was in I will look for original (not digi) and scan it in to send to you!

I agree it might be difficult to have an appropriate habitat for both in the same setup. My other question would be the secretion that droseras and others produce to help trap the insects as well as the hairs in the throat of many. Not sure if any of this would be irritating to a cham.

Lots of people use airplants in with the chams, if you are looking for something different

Hey,
i was thinking that when i initially posted, but decided to go ahead and post anyway. I just had the thought that maybe the drip sytem for the veil's drinking water could drip slowly into a nep's pot, thereby supplying the needed humidity. I would not imagine that many cps would work, and would never try it with anything less hardy than a d. capensis or d. spathulata. I just dont want the veil eating a dew's leaves and getting poisoned or a veil munching off the leaves of a nep and it never being able to trap. Would be neat though, right. I am however putting several neps in my new tropical herp tank, as my long tail lizards love to use the pitchers from a n. ventricosa as hiding spots. They get out just fine, and i think their droppings in the plant do the same thing for the plant that a bug would. Kinda mutually benificial. as for cps, my list goes something like this (keeping in mind i dont have the correct spelling in front of me)

2 VTS typical
1 s. dixie lace
1 s unidentified hybrid
1 s alata
whole crap load of baby s flava
1 s pupurea
1 d spathula clump. and i mean a clump
1 d capenis typical clump see above
1 d capesis red clump
1 d redia "big easy"
1 d scorpiodes
3 d burminii
1 d alelea
1 d muli-extrema clump
3 n ventricosa
1 n lowii
1 n judith finn
1 n khasi... something
1 n highland hybrid and cutting (i dont have the sheet in front of me)
1 n ampullara red speckled
1 n raff.... something
1 p lucitania

lots of seeds. In fact, if you have need of any seeds i have a small selection that has been sitting in my fridge all winter and are ready for sowing. if you would like a list of what i have, let me know and i could send you some. also, i am looking to replace my sunpitcher which was a casualty of my moving appartments.

in the meantime, anyone else have a answer about this veil and cp question.

Thanks,
Jeff
