"PROVEN FEMALE"

michaelburton Mar 07, 2006 10:41 PM

What does proven female or proven breeder actually meen? I read in the classifieds that a female was proven and she would not throw still borns or slugs. Is this possible to know? Even if she had a successful litter before isn't their a chance she next one could be slugs? I believe I has also seen the term proven breeder with a male as well. Does this just meen that he has bred before and he is not a "lazy" male? Any information on this term would be appreciated.

(male or female)only means they bred and produced a viable litter. Slugs and stillborns are always a possibility, and so are lazy breeder males, unless they say he is a proven active breeder.
Hope that helps.

That's what I thought. So if someone says they are a proven breeder and will not throw still borns or slugs, this would be a false statement?

It would be correct in the sense that for THEM she did not throw slugs or still born, but it would not mean she never would. Considering environment, timing, and many other factors determine slug or stillborn count, a blanket statement like that could never hold true.

Hey Micheal,

I totally agree with Laura, just because she has had good litters in the past doesn't mean that she won't have a bad litter in the future. That is just lying to say that.

The only time I would use the term proven for an animal is if they are het for some trait. ie proven het for Albino. That would make sense then, since its just saying "Hey I produced albinos with her"

Agreed to all above and would add it's fair to call any animal a proven breeder even if it's a normal not het for anything but has produced viable offspring. No way anyone can gaurantee it will ever produce again.
