Hi
i was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts to whether the continued collecting of Alterna from the wild is having a negative impact on local populations.

This is a subject that has been covered quite thoroughly in the past, but to summarize:

As far as having *any* impact on the overall population of alterna, the answer is an almost unequivocal NO. Lampropeltis alterna has a VAST range throughout the trans-pecos, yet only a very tiny percentage of that habitat is accessible to human collectors (probably less than 1%). Although collecting may have a small local affect in certain hard-hunted areas, don't worry about the status of the species as a whole.

I recently read a ad on another forum that stated on a good year, us collectors find less than 3% of the GrayBands in the areas we hunt. We are in no way harming the population. If everyone was finding 10 to 20 every trip, then we would have a problem, but our lucky few are harmless. In the Davis Mountains for example, your lucky to find 1 for every 30 nights of hunting. I know alot of people that have never found one in years of searching.

I know lizard lovers probably like that you take GBK from the wild. Just think of how many lizard's lives have been spared!LOL!!!

Been going there on and off since 1980's . . . And no change except more traffic = more DORs (unfortunately)
