Nice basking areas for a growing turtle

BDHomer Jul 27, 2003 11:25 PM

Hello again, few more questions.

My little RES girl( okay, not little. 521 grams ) named Tootsie, is all better now with her respritory infection and shell rot. Going to fill her 60 gallon tank up from 7 inches of water to about..11 inches or so. Maybe more. ( Tank is only like 19 inches high, but 48 inches long)

I was wondering if this basking area would support her weight? At 521 grams now and not close to full size yet, I imagine she will be quite heavy. This is the basking thing I was thinking about http://www.herpsupplies.com/cgi-bin/perlshop/perlshop.cgi?action=thispage&thispage=Group7428.html&ORDER_ID=030727120220

Doesn't look too sturdy for a heavy turtle. Anyone else can comment on this? And anyone ever order from Herp Supplies?

Another few questions I have not about the turtle is-

Is there some type of stuff I should " dust " her food with like I do my bearded dragon?

Is this huge monster Fluval 204 filter I bought for her okay?

How hot should the basking area get?

and

How warm should the water be at day/night.

Thanks again to anyone who can help!

Tootsie the Turtle thanks you!

Hello again, few more questions.
>>> Hey.

>>>I have same tank, seems to be 55 gallons unless its wider then mine. I have my water up about 12 inches for a male RES about 6-7 inches. Any higher isn't too good on those tanks seeing how they would be close to the basking lamp

>>>Ah direct link to the url of the page you got it from.. I can't view that since I think it's your shopping address which is already expired

Doesn't look too sturdy for a heavy turtle. Anyone else can comment on this? And anyone ever order from Herp Supplies?

>>>I've been to that website haven't purchased anything. Be sure to post the correct url for the basking area so we can all take a look

Another few questions I have not about the turtle is-

Is there some type of stuff I should " dust " her food with like I do my bearded dragon?

>>>Dust as in put powder which has vitamin supplements? Well it's not a bad idea seeing how your turtle just had some problems. Personally I don't like messing with that stuff... if you do get some powder (I don't know what kind, I guess just read the labels) I've read to put a little jelly on the food then powder then maybe another layer of jelly so the powder just doesn't vaporize in the water.

Is this huge monster Fluval 204 filter I bought for her okay?

>>>Hm I read on austin's turtle page that a Fluval 304 is big enough for a 55 gallon tank. 204 is probably good enough but if possible go with a 304 or 404 since you might upgrade in the future to a larger tank/area. Curious how expensive was the 204.. the difference between 204>304>404 shouldn't be too great

How hot should the basking area get?

>>>I read anywhere from 85-100 degrees. I think mine is about 90 and they enjoy it

and

How warm should the water be at day/night.

>>>Your RES is pretty large so I'm guessing its a few years old at least. Maybe 5-6 years old? I don't know about female RES seeing how I only have males. So anyways I use 75 degrees on my adult males and their fine with it. I used to use even lower (just 70). Regardless of day/night you should just leave the temperature to 75 or so. Maybe a bit warmer since your turtle is coming off a infection

Thanks again to anyone who can help!

Tootsie the Turtle thanks you!

>>>Heh cute name

Hey!

Thanks for the reply!

The basking area is at http://herpsupplies.com/. You go to catalog, then cage accessories, then basking platforms/hammocks. The thing I am talking about should be the second item called Turtle Ramp. ( Largest one )

The Fluval 204 was 109 dollars. Prob a little too much, but eh. The most powerful one was... 199 dollars. Litttttle too much for me, think I'll more or less be okay with this monster Fluval 204.

It's just gonna be one turtle anyways...and some goldfish...which...won't survive a minute

She is about 2 1/2 years old, and a very snappy aggresive girl. I bought a 75 watt bulb today but considering how close the thing will be to the lamp, I might need to go a little lower. ( Basking area, that is)

Want a good sturdy easy to access basking set up, cause she always struggled with all our other ones. Was gonna get her a male stud, decided otherwise thanks to some tips here.

Got a little more adjustments to do to her tank, so far she has no water in her tank, vet said give it another day or two. And it's getting on my nerves She keeps thumping her shell all day against the glass... thump..thump..thump... but ehh

Any tips on a nice basking area would be great. The tank is about 18 inches wide or so. Would have to re-mesure, it's been a while.

Anywhoo, gonna catch a few ZzzzzzZ's and check back here in the morning. Thanks!

Woah hold on a minute why is she in a tank with no water? She's aquatic get her in water fast they shouldn't be forced to be outside of water they could die

BDHomer Jul 28, 2003 10:10 AM

She has a 20 gallon feeding tank with 5 inches of water she's in each day for a couple of hours. Vet said to keep her out of water for the week because of her infection except for the couple of hours each feeding a day.

shocker Jul 28, 2003 10:56 AM

fluval 204 for $109 is a ripoff...you can get 404s for $100 at places like bigalsonline.com. you can get them for even cheaper at ebay.

BDHomer Jul 28, 2003 11:59 AM

Wow, thats nice. Going to give back the 204 and get a 404. HAve any good sites where I can get some nice sturdy basking areas?

Engloid Jul 28, 2003 06:24 PM

for basking, I use a 40 watt incandescent bulb. It's the kind that's pointed and is often in ceiling fan light fixtures or chandaliers. It puts out enough heat at about 6-8 inches that they really like basking.

The ramp may not be enough to hold the turtle, but I'm not sure. I have the kind that looks like a fake rock (on top) and goes in the corner of the tank with suction cups to the tank. Don't get that kind, as it will not hold a larger turtle.

If you get the ramp and it doesn't work out for you, I may be interested in buying it from you for my small turtles.

Oh, and when the vet says it's ok to put the turtle in water, fill the tank up as far as you can get it without letting the turtles excape over the top from the basking area. they love deeper water.
