Question about growth...

Lampropeltis23 Mar 08, 2006 10:18 AM

I know, I know, there are all sorts of variables involved.....blah, blah, blah.

But here is the question anyway - just give me any one of ya'll's (??) experiences.

About how long does it take a hatchling Florida or Eastern king to reach 16" in lenght if it has been fed once a week. I know when they hatch out they are generally about 9 - 11" I know its an odd question. I am just trying to get an age estimate of my new baby. (I will be posting some pics soon).

Thanks

Look at it logically - kingsnakes typically hatch in July or August. So, if this snake was 9-11 in. long at hatch and is only 16 in. now, it couldn't be older than from last year's hatch time. This puts the age at 7 or 8 months or so. I mean it couldn't have hatched in Aug 04 and be only 16 inches (well maybe under extreme conditions, but I doubt that is the case.)

Worst case I'm wrong and it is a few months older or younger, but you get the picture.

I bought a FL king from Crimsonking at the Daytona Expo Aug 20. I believe it was hatched in late June or early July. It has been fed aproximately once a week. He is now eating a medium pink sometimes 2 a week. I just measured him, and he is right at 16". I would say if everything went well with no problems feeding, that he is approximately the same age. I'd say about 8 months old. Crimsonking would have a better idea because he hatched the one I got from him. Where did you get yours? If it had troubles feeding and grew slower, it could be from '05. My female is a little bit smaller from about the same time. Derek
