Ok guys, I need a group effort here...

I took my old 20gal long that I started with and gave it to my step son for his new Ball Python, Striker. Ok, so I am buying all new stuff for my leos... here is my questions:

First off, I plan on using Zoo Med Vita Sand... please dont get OT on this and go into impaction. I am aware of the risks, and I plan on taking them and doing my best to keep the animals safe. That said, what is the best way to heat the sand to 88-89 degrees. I plan on using a flourescent strip light (ReptiSun 2.0) for viewing purposes during the day. At night they will be seen using some type of Nightglo lights. Since I am pretty sure the flourescent will warm the air temp, but do little for the substrate I plan on using a UTH also. Here's what I need to know.. how or what kind of thermostat do I ask for at Home Depot... how does it work, is it possible to get the thermostat to read the sand temp and kick the UTH on when the sand drops in temp, and secondly, what is the best thermometer to use to check the temperature of my sand. I have tried a few different mercury types and I feel like the temps are unreliable... and I've been told that there isn't a need to pay the money for a laser thermometer... so any ideas.

Jeff

can i get "OT" please? i want to suggest T-rex cali-sand if your going to use sand. i used it for 3 years and i never had a problem. i only stopped because of the cost. i have had one impaction, and it was with the zoo med stuff.

Hey Jeff I use a laser thermometer to read the sand temp, and also the rack's temp. Look up at the bean farm.
