Some Interesting Observations re my female alligator lizard

JonathanVP Jul 28, 2003 12:18 AM

I caught my female alligator lizard about a month ago and have noticed some interesting things about her that I wanted to share.
1. One of the many reasons why they dig is to get away from a bad smell (she apparently has a good sense of smell). I made the mistake of catching a stink beetle and I thought she would eat it. Instead she dug everywhere to get away from the smell. I removed the beetle and she is okay.
2. She is a finicky eater. There are some crickets that are not to her liking. She would eat one and then spit it out as if the taste does not agree with her. I have noticed several half-digested crickets in my lizard cage even though they are all from the same batch.
3. Wild alligator lizards do exhibit some displacement behavior. If you every noticed why a caught lion or tiger paces back and forth in their cage it is because they are bored. Wild alligator lizards tend to exhibit similiar behavior by running around their cage or by not eating (stress).
4. I have noticed my female to be very hungry at feeding times and not at others. But she does tend to eat alot generally.
5. Also, I have observed that my female has the tendency to like one particular spot in her cage which is not under her heat lamp. The reason for this is unknown to me.

Cool. However I would have to say #1-2 are most likly just coinsedences. I highly dobt they dig because of a bad smell and I realy dont think they care how a cricket tastes. However I could be wrong.

Jason,
Check out this link under the feeding section
http://cluster4.biosci.utexas.edu/deathvalley/elgaria/behavior.htm

In it the author describes that this particular type of alligator lizard may not like earthworms due to bad taste. This implies that alligator lizards may have a keen sense of taste as well as smell.

"as if to remove a distasteful substance" Taken directly from that site. This means nothing it is a guess not a fact. I would however like to learn more about it. Maybe in the coming weeks I will atempt to offer my S. Aligator Lizards earth worms.
