Grunngg Mar 08, 2006 08:52 PM

So i'm think about a gecko for my next reptile. I can find care sheets for the ones im interested in, but I can't find much on temperment. Does anyone have experience with:
Viper Geckos
Fat Tail Geckos
or Leaf Tail Geckos?

I have a couple breeds of leaf tail, lineatus and sikorae, both of these seem to be very good natured as long as you don't get them stressed out. Things like taking them on a trip tend to upset them and then they get a little cranky. Otherwise my geckos are great little troopers, I take them out a few times a week and let them walk around on my hands and the couch until they feel like wandering back into the cage. I think a lot of it is just how you handle them though, if you hold them tight they get a little torqued, but if you let them feel like they're free to walk around, then they really don't mind.

Fat tails are very easy goin'. Actually seem to enjoy being handled.

I am currently keeping 2.3 viper geckos, 1.1 giant leaf tailed geckos (U. fimbriatus), and 1.2 fat tailed geckos. They are all great herps with their own unigue strengths. The leaf tails are more for looking at than anything else. They are amazing creatures but stress out easily and don't particularly like being handled. If you are looking for something you can handle I would recomend the fat tails. They get used to being handled pretty quick if you get them as babies. Unfortunatly they hide most of the day. The viper geckos are very neat, but due to their small size I don't think they should be handled often. They are extemely prolific and if kept well fed with lots of calcium can turn out eggs almost year round. You may want to also look into crested geckos and thier cousins in the genus Rhacodactylus. Personally I think they are much better looking than fat tailed geckos, and accept handling better than almost any geckos I can think of.
