MITES...please help

crazyreptilelady Mar 09, 2006 08:30 AM

So I have a female 05 who was aquired in late November. I have been watching her. Treated her for a RI. Was seen by the vet. Has otherwise been doing well. About a month ago she got a white spot on her head and started soaking. From the info here, I was suspicous of mites so I started watching her closely. She shed about 2 weeks later -her first shed since I have had her-and it went away and she stopped soaking. I went on vacation last week and just returned and she is COVERED in adult (??) mites. About the size of a sentence period. I plan on ordering some prevent-a-mite when LLLreptile opens at 1pm my time but is there anything I can do for her today until I receive the products?? What cleaning procedure can I do immediately after work to relieve some stress. Are there any last effects? This is my second ball python and have never experienced this before. Do I need to treat all my reptiles?? I have other snakes and geckos. Please help!

In the meantime soak them overnight in a tub in the cage over the heat spot, add some mild soap. Water shallow enough to prevent drowning...covered container with air holes. mites can't swim, many die in this process. Removethe snakes to quarantine, disinfect everything in their habitats, bleach is a good mite killer. As for the medications you must follow the exact instructions as if you don't you can harm your snakes. Nisa I have no infor on GTPs at all. There is a Chondro Net site that has most of the top breeders and discussion forum, etc., I'd email as many breeders of GTPs as possible and get any data you can there.

Thanks! I've got posts out, hoping for replies soon. Soaked them in plain warm water and Mom has removed a lot of them with her fingernails that were loose under the scales, the guys seem to appreciate it. More soaks are next on the list.

I have used extra virgin olive oil, lightly coat your hands and then let your snake crawl thru your hands, this will lightly coat your snake and I do mean lightly no need to saturate just a light coat of "extra virgin olive oil" when the mites come out from the scales they will come into contact with this oil and it will kill them (suffocation) Also I like to add the no pest strip in the room, not in the cage but in the room, this will do away with anything that hatches so that the cycle cannot be repeated and I'd leave the no pest strip in the room for 3-4 months.
KILL THE MITES
Good Luck Mike

Thank you all for your suggestions. I purchased her in late November and have had quite a few probs with her. Treated an RI to find out that she is completely blind in one eye. Got that under control and now mites. Poor girl. I was able to have prevent-a-mite sent overnight to me (if the airplane will allow an aerosol can - they werent sure) so it should be here today. I followed your advice and bought nix to treat her directly. I took her cage and soaked all the furniture. When prevent-a-mite comes I will clean her cage again and cook the wood hide to kill the eggs as suggested below. I searched her cage only to find that it appeared that most of the adults were on her and very few strayed to the bedding. I sure hope that means that it is less likely they have spread in the room. When the prevent-a-mite comes I will treat all the snakes cages as a precaution. Any other advice? Can they have a lasting effect? After everything yesterday it turns out she was in a shed and shed last night. When I reinspected her it seemed as though I saw a mite in her heat pit. Any suggestions here??
