strange behavior

Argos_mom Mar 09, 2006 10:20 AM

ok this is weird to me. my snake has been crawling under her water bowl. she has a hide and the humidity is up to where it should be. i have had to switch to a smaller bowl for her water but i lleave the big one she hidess under empty. cause every time she moves she creates a flood. when i pickl her up from under the bowl she is so cold and i worry she is getting too cold. i also worry that the little one with her will get stuck. he gets in the middle and when he is under the bowl by himself i cant see him. so is there any ideas why she is doing this? i mean is there something im not doing. should i be worried that she is doing this and should i be worried about the little one getting stuck. i tried taking the big bowl out but she was so pittiful looking for it i put it back. so any ideas would be helpful. thanks.

Reading your post, it sounds like your snake is exhibiting pretty much normal behavior....Ball pythons, for the most part, hide for most of their lives. They are very secretive, solitary critters in nature, and any stressor would increase that shyness. The big and obvious stressor is that you're keeping another snake in the same enclosure. Get each snake in its own enclosure, and things may change.

Ok if you can rule out bad temps and humidity or that she has mites or ticks and she is not soaking because she is going into shed or has other injuries - then you are probably looking her trying to find a more comfortable hide (dark, tight etc) - or very possibly since you have her in with a little guy - a hide without company. My suggestion rule out the first six then separate your snakes.

its not the comapny becaue they have been this way for over a year and this is the first time that she has done this. its not humidity or temp or parasites. and they are not getting separated. i am keeping the little one for a friend at college and there is no where else to put him. they have been fine so far.

After reareading your previous post and she is not in the waterdish but under it I revise my answer to:

Either she is trying to get away from the male (most likely). It may be that he has reached his sexual maturity and is trying to breed with her and she doesn't like it.

or

She doesn't like her hide

Everyone on this forum knows that my answer to everything I see my ball python do is to add hides. If she's using a hide, I add another one just like it somewhere else in the cage. If she's not using a hide, I add another one of a different kind. If she were mine, I'd add another hide, but in this case, maybe I'd be right.

In terms of the separation, is there any way that you can divide the tank to let each of them have his/her own space? If the tanks are small enough, you might be able to find a shelving unit so that you could put one over the other and have two tanks.

Either way, I'd recommend posting a picture if possible. If people see the setup and individual snakes, they might be able to help you more.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

no, there is no way to give them a separate space. it is a 50 gal aqarium but then one would be on the hot side and the other would be on the cold side. they are used to being together and the male is too small to breed. i think she is just going through her cycle. but i am not worried anymore. if she diesnt like her hide then she just got that way cause as i have said before this is the first i have seen her do this. and she has had her hide for a while. but thanks to all those who helped and no thanks to those who gave me nothin but bull[bleep] and [bleep]in
