Best ways to get rid of mites

josh1990 Mar 09, 2006 02:05 PM

I was wondering the best way of getting rid of those hateful scale mites.

Does anyone know some good products and/or methods?

Thanks

Look at www.pro-products.com for a product called Provent-a-Mite. If used exactly as directed on the can, it is safe and does the job.

Note: some snakes seem to be more sensitive to the active ingredient. Mountain kingsnakes (zonata) are for sure.

If you rush it and spray the cage substrate and put the snake back in while the substrate is wet, it can be bad news for the snake.

Take substrate out, clean cage, spray the product, let it dry all the way, add new bedding, put snake in - no mites.

If you don't want to buy P-a-M, then wash the cage thoroughly and destroy the bedding, etc. Replace with newspaper. If you can get powder used for head lice, sprinkle some of that in the bottom of the cage. Flea powder will work too. Keep checking the cage for mites. Mite eggs hatch in about 2 weeks, so you may see them again if you didn't kill the eggs, so keep checking for mites weeks later. Good luck.

My local pet store advised me of a method using NIX a product for childrens head lice. 1 bottle 12.00$ canadian makes roughly 4 quarts . Spray everywhere including on snake and remove water dish not cause it poison but so the snake will not immediatly remove nix. Repeat in 7 days .Problem gone.
