OK...I feel like such a newbie! ???

lele Mar 09, 2006 04:29 PM

Attitude Dude is doing great - eating, drinking and making merry! lol! (OK, not everyone will get that)

I want to make some adjustments to branches and dripper setup. I was thinking of setting him up somewhere else for the night (take him out after he is asleep) or mess around while he is in the cage tomorrow. He is only in a 16x16x20 (b/c he is so tiny) and I would rather not keep sticking my hands in there. So do you think I can take him out after asleep (never done that)?

I was said to my self, "Self, if someone else asked this what would I tell them?" My answer would be "ask someone else" lol!!

Help appreciated!

I'm not sure what happens with others, but when I stick my hand in a cage at night around here, it usually results in a hiss, followed quickly by a bite and surely a leap to the floor.

Lele, you crack me up! YOU are the expert! How about doing your re-arranging in the very early a.m. before he's warmed up and moving around?
Tyler: sounds like you better use your guinea pig for night-time handling-LOL Do yours REALLY do that? As you know, I have to next to NO experience, but the ones I have/had sleep like the dead-although I'll admit, I;ve never stuck my hand in while they're napping.

Diane - I am HARDLY an expert, everyone just thinks so b/c I obsess and I post a lot! lol!! My "newbieness" is showing! I do have to say that I was feeling sort of weird getting a new cham even though Luna died back in July. I was just so connected to her (probably too much, as some might think ) but now that he is here it IS such a new experience!

Maybe I'll try some things out in the early morning. Not sure when he will sleep after his long trip. But think I'll turn out his lights soon.

I had a hilarious experience with Dexter when I had some people over and some of my close friends wanted to see him. It was like midnight so he had been sleeping for 4 hours. Well they saw how beautiful he was (he is about 20x better looking at night..soooo much brighter) and then they wanted to have him sit on their hand. I thought yah no problem he should be fine with that because I've had him sleep on my arm/shoulder quite a few times so I thought nothing of it.

Well he was sleeping on the back of the cage on the screen (which he has only done a few times) so I was working on him, trying to get him to crawl onto my hand. 10-15 minutes passed and I was still working on him and he had been awake the whole time..but was like a zombie...not caring at all that I was touching him. All of a sudden POW!! he puffed up, flared up, hissed, swung and tried to bite me, etc etc. LOL it was so hilarious....he was just staring up at me like a zombie for 15 minutes and then all of a sudden...something kicked on and he realized that "hey, these people are disturbing my sleep" LOL...it was so awkward. I finally got him out but he STAYED pissed and flared up for like 15 minutes. My friends were freaked.

Moral: Chameleons do not like to be disturbed (much like humans) when they are sleeping.

=) Hope the story made sense, it's late on a Thursday night

The babies aren't too bad, but anything big enough to defend itself does LOL.... I don't handle my panthers. None of them, unless I'm taking pics or the very rare cage switch. That probably adds to the skittish moods of them.

Wow, Luna could have slept thru a tornado! Then she had that sleepy-eye look for about 20 minutes after she was up. I guess I'll just have to figure this guy out

I used to clean all my C. chamseleon cages at night after they were asleep. I would just lift the branch out that they were sleeping on and stick the end of it in a bucket of dirt to keep it at the angle it was at in the cage. They would look at me with that "oh...its just you cleaning the cages again" kinda look and then close their eyes and go back go sleep (normally)....as long as I didn't have the bright lights on in the area where I put the bucket of dirt. Their temperaments were similar to panthers...so it might work with them too?

It's weird eh? Dealing with Pudge became an easy routine. When Squig arrived, I was a reck. I must have stood in front of his cage for hours! I had to make a few changes as well, so I just pulled him out of the cage (very gently). He thinks I am a monster, so he will move quickly from my hearding hand onto my outstreched hand. He got dark for a moment, but quickly settled down and hung on tight, watching the dogs and household action. I made my changes quickly, then put him back. Now, when I clean (I have a reptarium with a plastic bottom), I just use a damp paper towel and wipe up the bottom. He has a nice corner to hide in...he thinks I can't see him there! When I am done, he just moves back to his perch!

You'll feel a little more at ease as each day goes by. It's nice to have a baby in the house!

Hey Kris,

Nice to hear that YOUR newbie is doing so well! Yes, it is very different - and b/c his cage is so small. At least with Luna's big one she had lots of places to disappear to but I feel like my hand is such a monstrosity to him in his tiny world! I might take kinyonga's advice and just take him out on the plant or stick he is on (haven't peeked in yet to see where he settled), then I can do what I wnat and he will never know! I just like to get a routine down, mainly for where his dripper will be so he can count on it always being there.

Damn he is cute. Hey - how about some newbie pics or the Sguister??

Lele...just be sure to watch him while he/the plant/the stick is out of the cage...he could creep away while you aren't looking if he decides not to go back to sleep.

One evening I heard him Hiss LOUD, I thought wow, whats wrong as he never is Grumpy even if I go in there at night.
I happened to look in and there was a LARGE cricket on a leaf beside him, he was really TICKED OFF at it, so I removed the pesty critter, and Cad was a happy camper again Made me laugh though the way he reacted to a BUG.

Funny their antics!

I've heard them do that too! Have you ever watched one try to kick a cricket off its back?

PHEve Mar 10, 2006 10:23 PM

LOL, no never saw him kick one off his back, but I have seen him use his back legs to scratch his head, crazy looking !
