some advice

jimhellwig19 Mar 09, 2006 06:22 PM

i am looking into buying or adopting a new snake and i was wondering if anyone knew of any good websites that detail all of the python and all of the boa species...i have kept a chondro, a sand boa and a boa, but do not know much about the other varieties of these snakes out there...also any advice would be appreciated as to what animals you all recommend...i am not necessarily opposed to a colubrid, either, if they are calm, relatively large, and don't mind handling, thanks.

Don't know any website that has all that impeccably laid out. But Forum searching here (or even checking the classifieds and if anything catches your eye researching that species further) may be a good way to start. The Barrons (publisher) series of books, often written by Bartlett and Bartlett give a fairly decent general overview, depending on title and such.

For colubrids, off the top of my head, I'd recommend a florida king or some kind of pine or bull snake.

If you just want a list of species, EMBL is a good place to start. It isn't a hobbyist page (no caresheets, etc) but it does have a reasonably up to date list of genera and species. Many of the species accounts have links to photos as well.
