question regarding carnivorous pants

porkchop48 Mar 09, 2006 06:55 PM

Now that i have caught the dart frog bug im getting ready to start up my second dart frog tank for a group of leucs. I have heard both good and bad about putting any kind of carnivorous plants in with them. i would like to just have one or two small ones in each tank just to help with stray bugs. Any one have any suggestions? Thank you in advance. Oh by the way my tincs are doing great if i ever get good enough pics to guess the sex ill be sure to post. you guys have been great. Thanks for all the help

I thought I read on this discussion board that carnivorous plants are not good in a viv. I'm sure the people that know for sure will chime in.

As far as I understand, most carnivorous plants require high lighting, and soils that aren't always present in dart frog terrariums. Most are also very fragile, with the exception of pitcher plants, and can be destroyed by a nice big leuc flopping on top of it. Also, many species available are temperate and require resting periods during the winter. I have had no success with Nepenthes in my terrarium, though I know some people that have. I do have a few good things to say however about Utricularias. Personally, unless you've grown them otherwise, I would avoid trying to use most carnivores in a dart frog setup.
