To breed or not to breed

wftright Mar 09, 2006 07:44 PM

When I asked my questions about third snake options in a post a few days ago, I mentioned that I'm not ready to breed snakes. One of the things I wondered was whether any of the species I wanted were species that one should really breed if one is going to own them.

My thought process was this:

I've read that some of the kingsnakes occur in only a few locations and that collection of WC specimens is putting pressure on the species. If so, having individuals of these species available for hobbyists/collectors/breeders may depend on keepers developing a strong captive breeding program. In that case, keeping one of these snakes without breeding it hurts the community because that snake is taken out of the pool.

No one mentioned this factor with any of the species that I mentioned, but are there species about which you feel this way? Is there some kind of snake that you feel someone should breed if he/she is going to own?

Thanks,

Bill

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

Maybe Todos Santos Island Mtn. Kings would fit that bill.
