Are leos social?

xelda Jul 28, 2003 02:16 AM

I haven't had problems keeping two leos in my 10 gallon tank. One is male and one is female. They haven't had any issues with aggression as far as I can tell.

I want to do some expanding, so I'm wondering if I should put them each into their own 10 gallon tanks or move them both into the same 20 gallon?

I guess my question is, would they get lonely if I separated them? I could just be imagining there's some kind of bonding going on, but they seem fine sharing hides, lying together on the rock, and even drinking water at the same time.

I have read that leos are not social animals and that its best, but not necessary to keep them seperate. But, the other day someone posted on here that leos are social so im not sure anymore. I would guess that seperate is better because it would reduce stress on the animals. Either way is probably fine though. Just my two cents. Im sure someone else will have more information for you.

In their natural habitat, the 'wild' leo's are not considered social. They do not travel together, and pretty much live by themselves, and come in contact only during the mating season.

Howeve you must remember leo's do have their own personality and yours might accept each other. But their is a difference although Im not sure which one in your case, between them accepting each other and prefering to live with another.

Most breeders and the such prefer keeping leo's apart so they can monitor each one more closely, however if both of yours seem in good health, then I would base my decision on wether you want them to breed or not.
If you dont want them to breed or are not ready for eggs yet, then I would separate them. But if you do want them to breed you might want to keep them together, although you could keep them separate and just put them together for a week or two for them to mate also.
I would just be carefull that the male doesnt sexually develop and attempts to mount LOL the female before she is ready, since this could be bad for her.

So its up to you, and I hope Ive helped. =)

I have heard that it is believed leopard geckos live in loose colonies. There is no documentation of this however because nearly all of the wild caught leos were collected when they were hunting out in the open alone.

I keep five (4 female, 1 male ) in the same cage without any problems. It is a big cage and there are plenty of hiding spots though. 2 of them always seem to hide together, but the others usually find their own spots.

I am a believer that they can be social, depends on the individual. I have a harem of my male (Milo) and three females in a 55 gallon, and they are fine. They have been together their entire lives, and I have nevr had any problems. Sometimes they stay all together and other times they spread out. I would say as long as they seem content together, there is really no reason to seperate them. Unless you want to. I would just make sure they have room to be alone if they want to, that should minimize any stress.
