overfeeding problem

bluetreefingers Mar 09, 2006 11:10 PM

ive had my crestie for a few months. hes about 3 inches long not including the tail, so hes not a newborn but hes still young.

i'd put small med crickets in everyday but he would only eat about 2 every other day.

until recently i discovered that he will snatch a cricket from my fingers if i put it about an inch away from his mouth. he will easily eat about 3-4 every night, and i dont want to push it fearing i may overfeed him, but it seems to me he wouldnt have a prob going for a few more.

im a bit worried because i understand they are not heaviy eaters, often times being fed every other day. but this guy is eating 3-4 every night with no prob!
my assumption is that maybe he ate less before because he is in a large enclosure and it may be difficult to track a small cricket walking around when to big of an enclosure.

but i guess i'd better get advice from other experienced crestie owners.

thanks for your time.

Hi Aaron,

I was told that while they are growing it should not be a problem to feed them as much as they will eat in a single sitting. I spoke to another crested owner today and he said his 2.5" svl crested is eating a dozen small crickets a day without any problems.

I don't think you can really "overfeed" a youngster. I'd offer him what he'll readily take until he's full at this age. Even as an adult, my crestie can eat as much CGC as she wants. She doesn't get crickets anymore (except as a special treat once in awhile).

There's an old quote that says: if your dog is fat, you need more exercise.

It applys here in the context of when I see a fat animal, it generally isn't exercising enough. A crestie should have plently of plants, lots of climbing vines, etc...to keep it active and moving so as to burn off excess fat.
