Should I get a king?

scottyo2u Mar 10, 2006 05:28 AM

I am tring to decide if I should get a king snake. I have had corns and garters but never a king. King snakes have always been my favortie snakes even as a kid. I do have a few questions about them though:

I got corns beacuse of their easy to handle nature. How to kings rate?

What would be a good starter king?

What is their size range?

Do they take to frozen thawed mice well?

Thanks,
Jennifer

I am no expert on kings kind of new actually but I have an Albino Ruthven which is fantastic very easy to handle and great eater that eats thawed hoppers now and as baby ate thawed pinkies.
I am also looking into a Mex king which I hear very good. Lots of kings but I dont think you will regret an Albino or regular color ruthven.
This site lists sizes of most kings though it doesnt list all . I didnt want a big king but I know some prefer bigger kingsnakes.

I got a Mexican Black Kingsnake as my "first snake". He's generally pretty calm and easy to handle. He eats frozen thawed mice and has a great appetite. MBKs get to be about 4 or 5 feet. As I understand, they're a little on the small side compared to other kings, but a few people around here have some pretty big ones.

I would say, go for it. You're probably more experianced than I am, and I've never had any trouble with my king.

You ask a trick questions. All your questions depend on the king snake you get. Some species of kings are big and some are small and as for temperment. I have one Cali king that likes to bite me and two Cali kings that are real nice. So, the real answers is it depends on the snake. Sorry for not beening more helpful.
