Again: dione/bimaculata

Arnd Jul 28, 2003 03:05 AM

Hi,

I read some of the bimac/dione threads with great interest. Could somebody help identify this? It was sold to me as bimaculata, the pair reproduced (3 eggs, 2 fertile, still incubating). Information in Schulz (Elaphe Fitzinger) was not really helpful, however, I now have serious doubt as to its identity & suspect it is a Chinese dione.
If anybody has incubation times for Chinese dione at specific temperatures, that may also help. (Overall incubation reportedly is much shorter for dione, but I do not have data for Chinese animals).

Thanks for any help,

Arnd

I'm pretty sure it's a c. Chinese dione. Their incubation time is a little longer than other dione, maybe around 35 days.

Hello Terry,

thx, what I thought. There seem to be quite a few wrongly labelled pics in the internet (typically dione labelled bimaculata), did you observe this also? It led me to believe what the breeder said as to its identity. Unfortunately the male died unexpectedly in June and I just bought a 0,1 bimaculata
Some obvious differences sparked my previous doubt again.
A friend bought a pair from the same breeder: they took 31 days (I do not know the precise temp).
Still, these are fantastic animals, I'm really hooked. Maybe I try to get a female bimac and a male dione ...

The dione are sometimes wrongly labeled, but it is pretty good on this forum. You can always ask, and if someone is around they'll try to i.d. it for you.

You should get a male and female bimaculata. This is a wonderful species. I have three color morphs and love this species. Here is a current pic of a cross bt. my brown phase and blonde phase bimacs....

The dione are also very nice and make great pets. I like the South Korean the best. The time on your c. Chinese dione sounds about right for incubation. I'm pretty sure mine were bt. 30 and 35 days when I had them.

Good luck...
