BREEDING PROBLEM

bluetreefingers Mar 10, 2006 10:29 AM

i have had a pair of leo's for about 2 years now. both are full grown. until recently i decided to put them together in a 20 gal tank for breeding purposes.

its been about 1 month or so since they are together and im not seeing anything going on. ive caught her running away from him a few times.
my concern is why arent they making babies?
they are both about the same size, they constantly have clean water, they have 4 hides well distibuted around the cage,
a 20gal undertank heater on one side, i live in miami so i am not concerned with temps being too low, they eat an average of 2-3 large calcium dusted crickets everyday...

everything is fine, they are in perfect health. they just dont seem to be doing the "deed".

so if anyone can help me, i'd tremendously appreciate it.

thanks
aaron

I never observed Kirmy and Alberto mate but Kirmy left one egg not so long ago so clearly they did. Leos being active at night its posable the are doing the "DEED" at night while you are sleeping. I believe it takes a bit longer than a month before eggs are laid anyway so give it a couple more weeks however I could be wrong.

Usually it takes about 3 weeks for eggs to show up. However if the female is not ovulating she will not produce any eggs, until three weeks after she shows folicles.

Here's a link to my site, showing a female ovulating and with eggs.

Also are you sure they are male and female? What was thought to be a male may in fact be another female. Sometimes it happens, just had it happen to a friend of mine. Was going to loan me, what we had both thought was a male, and when he brought him over, I realized it was a female. LOL She's still here and about to lay eggs any day now.

I'd also question the nutrients involved. 3 or 4 large crickets isn't very much for an adult leo. I use mealworms and my adult breeders can easily decimate a dish of them containing 50 or so every night between a pair... I go through between 1800 and 2200 mealies a week...for my 23 geckos... that works out to around 15 per night per gecko.. depending on their mood and health status... I would get a gram scale and weigh your leos. I would also make sure supplementation was right and all other issues are re-checked again instead of just saying "Oh, they're fine" because a lot of the time they aren't.

well i've taken a pretty close under look a few times and it seems pretty obvious to me that the male has what it takes to be considered a male but i may be wrong so i will post pictures hopefully tonight to get everyones aproval.

and about the ovulating part, i guess i just have to wait a while then.

thanks
