Our common garter snake has not been eating now since the 18th jan. We are starting to get a bit worried. We have tried different prey, at different tempretures and also slit a pinkies brain for her. She is still not eating. the only thing that we changed was the amount of time her light was on for but that was early dec. Any ideas?

I forgot to mention that she has a few lumps on her under scales as well.

Parasites can cause both lumps and a loss of appetite. Is this a wild caught or captive bred garter?

The light change that you mentioned, what is the photoperiod now?

We think she is wild caught but cant be 100% sure. Her photoperiod is now 15 hours as we thought she might be trying to brumate and thats why she wasnt eating, we changed it last weekend from around 9 hours

Have the temp's been consistent?

Usually not eating at this time of year isn't that much of a worry. Keep weight records, and if there is a 10% weight loss, it's time for intervention.

The lumps under the scales might be indication that there is something more going on. It might be worthwhile to have a vet check these out.
