Sexing my Leo.

bigguykev36 Jul 28, 2003 04:06 AM

Hello,
I'm Kevin, brand spankin new to this site. In my quest for a hobby, I stumbled across the ideea for herp breeding. I have a Leopard Gecko and a Columbian Rainbow Boa. I do not know the gender, or specifications about the type of Leo I have. I would like to figure out how to sex my Leo. I would also like to know if it's too old to breed. I'm assuming that Toad (my lizard) is around 6 years old. What is the average lifespan of one of these lizards? How old before they stop breeding. Would he be an alright candidate? How would I go about it? What do I do in the name of Herps everywhere.... What do I do?

Thanks!
Kev

3-4 years is prime for a female leo. After that, the amount of eggs she can have gradually declines. You can breed your leo but if you have a female already, you may want to get a male and female now.

About the sex, most leos sold in pet stores are female. They buy them in lots of temperature sexed females to ensure that they will all get along in a single tank. You more than likely have a female, and to get a male, you'll have to buy from a reputable breeder who incubates for males also.

Check the underside of your leo, near the vent. If it is a male, there will be a v shaped row of large pores that secrete a waxy substance, and there will be two rather large bulges just behind the vent, on the tail side. If there are no bulges and only a fine line of v shaped poors, you have a female. There are some pictures here on the forum, for comparison. If you leo doesn't like to be turned somewhat upside down for you to see, put her in a clear container and lift it so you can see the underside easily. Good luck!
