albino question...

pac-man Mar 10, 2006 03:49 PM

why arent albino corns like any other albino snake??you know the yellow and white ones..that would be a neat looking snake...

Replies (26)

xblackheart Mar 10, 2006 04:38 PM

I am not expert, but I think it is because they can still produce red. Albino corns still have yellow and white, though. It is mixed in with the red, pink and orange. I am going to hazard a guess and say that I think the way an albino looks is based on how the regular version of that snake produces it's color.

I agree totally. Also no expert, but seems logical if you take black away you have to see what is still left. An albino crow would be all white, a polar bear would be?

Well I said I was no expert. lol

Exactly! Because of the mutant gene, an amelanistic (AKA albino) corn snake is unable to make black pigment, but it can still make the red/yellow pigments in an entirely unrelated biosynthetic pathway. The same is true in other albino snakes. The corn just has a LOT more red/yellow pigment than most other snakes.

The yellow pigment that mammals produce is made in a branch of the biosynthetic pathway that makes black pigment. The albino mutant gene in mammals blocks the biosynthetic pathway right at the beginning. That is why an albino mammal doesn't show any yellow coloration.

As for the albino polar bear, I read somewhere that polar bears have black skin. An albino polar bear could not make black pigment, so it would have white fur, pinkish-white skin, and pink eyes from the reflection of light from blood in the capillary bed underlying the skin and retinas.

then check out butter corn snakes. For the most part they're yellow and white with a few in between shades. There's not many color combos that aren't out there when it comes to corns!

I guess they consider them hands, as they use them as such. Ok, I meant paws. Same difference, just a different name applied, as humans have to name everything. Although they do not posess the opposable thumb, they serve the same purpose! lol.

all albino polar bears would be white probably......the skin is black and fur is clear so fur reflects all the colors of the light to make it look white and the clear skin directs the sun right to the black skin to warm it........so if albino polars are white or pink??? they should still look white????????......

do bears have tails?......

technically north american bears are probably melanistic...at least to a degree...they grew black fur more and more in order to absorb the sunlight for heat and moreso to fade away into the thick woods ......if a black bear stands in the shadows of a forrest..........you will not see it if it does not move.....the black fur looks and blends into the shadows that well.....

also.there are albino black bears I think.I can;t remember....

I do know there are cinnamon ones that are dull to very bright orange shades......they are probably hypo-melnistics....in some regions the cinnamons make up a good portion of the population...like 20%.........there are brown ones.......there are some that have white chest or face patches....so they aren't actually melanistics I guess........

.........and they stink...........................hahahaaaa

but taste pretty good.............

Cornsnakes do not eat corn

All whiptail lizard are females

An electric eel can produce a shock of 2000 volts

Starfish can have up to 16 arms

Vultures can soar for hours without one beat of their wings

OK, which is not true?

I added the silly corn snake one to keep in the forum topic.

If you are implying that she is wrong (wasn't sure what the buzz meant) then you are incorrect.... Even in species that ONLY produce females a male still pops up. It would be the same as finding a naturally occuring albino but they still do pop up.

I was told that by a guy with a doc. I think in biology. He ran the herps at Toledo Zoo. Now that was many many years ago? But for the sake of the game. Her answer is wrong, and there is a more incorrect answer. Just like in school, please pick the BEST answer.

Before this gets pulled. The electric cat only does about 500-600 volts.

As far as I knew/know the rest are true.

If reading this I really like the week in review. Many a daily or biweekly corn contest? Trivia odd facts? I would not be the person, not near enough knowledge.

Just a thought?
