A few HC Doors

eatinmachine Mar 10, 2006 04:02 PM

I have found that my 2nd idea would be a lot of work and I don't think I am going to do it. It was to have a HC Door rack with one box wide and I don't hink that will work well. I am wondering if I can work in some of my 41 quart boxes. I have a semi large area but would prefer it not to be too deep. I know it isn't good to fit two different boxes on the same rack but I want to. My main concerns are sagging and fittin boxes nicely spaced. My dimensions on the two boxes are currently unavailable but I will get them. (I broke my toe and don't feel like moving stuff.) I am debating having lids or not and to have them lengthwise (if they had wheels which they don't they would slide on them) in or width wise in. I have another question which is that unless I go to oak doors, the doors at lowes and home depot are wood on the tall part and MdF on top and bottom is this ok? As I am going to cut it. Thanks for the answers and ideas Josh. At home depot it is like the same price for all the different size doors around 30inches. I would prefer to buy the doors soon.

well I climbed on the floor and got the dimensions and it hurt but here they are for the 41 quart hey are about 16x6x35 and the 31 quart is 15.75x6.75x26.25 with their lids on and without their lids they are 15.5x6.5x a little less than 26 for the 31 quart and for the 41 quart they are 16.5x a little less than 6x34.5. I am dead out of ideas. Any help is great.

My toe hurts and I am not good at explaining things. I need help on like shelf size and how it would fit my rubbermaids and sterlites. I basically need a HC door design that would work well and not waste a ton of space like my current setups. I also want to know if MdF doors have the tall sides with real wood and the bottoms and tops with MDF or if it is just the doors I have looked at and is this O.K I hope this makes more sense sorry if it doesn't I am about to go to sleep. Thanks for the replies Josh

There are a lot of different HC doors so I would not be surprised to see some that combine different materials. In fact I have seen some with pine frames but then particle board is used where the door knobs are drilled out.

You need to go back and rewrite those dimensions when your toe isn't hurting you so much. I know better than anyone that healthy dose of pain can affect how you think.

One quick comment. You can use boxes of different heights in the same rack. I have done this many times for boxes that are withing 5/16" in height of each other. I just build the rack for the taller box and then shim up the areas where the shorter boxes will be kept. I have used posterboard covered with contact paper, pieces of acrylic, and pieces of hardboard or pegboard to shim up boxes. No problems, no escapes.

Again, rewrite the measurements or write down the exact brand and model number of the tubs you want to use. I'm sure we can come up with something.

The box number for the 31 quart is 3A28 it is a rubbermaid revelations. It is blueish. As for the 41 quart I don't think I will use them and instead when it gets time I will build that one separate. Would those doors work well? I have 6 of these 31 quarts and would like to use them all. Could you please tell me would it be better I use lids or not use lids. I am not sure. I know there are lots of pros and cons for each but since it is my first rack would lids help with the margin of errors I may make? Thanks Josh
I will probably have more questions as we go.

Build the rack for use without lids. I think this is much better and best utilized the advantage of a rack.

What is the height of that box? I looked it up online and it appears to be a tall box. Is that correct?

But how would I fit boxes best? One per shelf but that sounds like a lot of cutting but I guess that is O.K if it is the best way.

What kind of space do you have for the rack? You said you did not want it to be very deep but said nothing about length or height.

If you can fit a rack made from full HC door blanks then you could buy 18" doors and have three boxes sliding in width-wise.

eatinmachine Mar 11, 2006 10:27 AM

6 foot length give or take and about 8 feet height but I would prefer it not to be that tall more like 6 foot max (I am only 5'4 or something still growing). Thanks for the replies Josh
