interesting observation...

lele Mar 10, 2006 04:51 PM

I ordered phoenix worms for the first time a few weeks ago (The Zan's foster mom told me about them). After doing much research about them I decided to give them a try. They are the larva (maggot) of the black soldier fly. Last night some things were flitting around the room and were easily caught. They looked much like a small wasp, but indeed they were the adult phoenix! With all my work with my wild silk moths I am have a pretty good eye for parasitic wasps and flies and this definitely had some key characteristics.

Sure that this is safe I thought: great, a new feeder for the gang, esp. the newbie. I put the two in newbie's cage and he watched them for quite sometime but he never shot either one! At first I was surprised, but it has very distinct yellow and black coloring on its tiny abdomen so he sees this as warning colors and wouldn't go near it. I left them there and he ended up walking right pat one as if it wasn't even there. So he will exist with it but not eat it. Darwin wouldn't eat one either.

It's too bad, b/c this would have been quite handy, but another interesting lesson in mimicry. If it looked more like a regular housefly it would have been a snack for sure!

You will notice the big fly eyes and the two wings, which are two identifiers for flies, vs. wasps, which have four wings and eyes are smaller.

How funny that would post this tonight! I just opened up the phoenix worm cup and found 2 of the "flies" and put them in with Valentino because I thought he would be so excited when he found them (IF he found them). Rats! I, also was hoping to get him to show an interest in eating when I'm around. I can't get EITHER of my chams to eat when I'm around. I think I better find a new hobby. Diane

Lele, when I went in to mist Valentino this a.m. he was looking at the flies crawling on the screen and shot and ate them both while I was watching. He then proceeded to do his business off the branch and into the potted plant. I am very pleased, as I saw him eat AND found a very large, white urate and nice fecal deposit. I think he has has now settled in and is out of danger. I have been very concerned for the past week. I hope little 'tude dude doesn't worry you as much as this little guy has worried me. Diane

for some reason my guy has no interest in them, but he did just take his first feeder from a cup! Luna was primarily a cu ot her face! lol! I will encourage both in this guy. He certainly hunts, too. Saw him shoot a cricket in the plant earlier. He seems to be settling in and doing just great! Now for a name...

I'm glad your little guy is settling in so well. I opened the phoenix worm cup again and a BIG fly flew out into Valentino's cage. he's watching it now, but it's a little different now than the ones that emerged yesterday and weren't yet flying that he ate. He has no desire to cup feed and I can't seem to get him interested, so I guess he'll end up a free range feeder. Have fun picking out a name. I'm sure he'll do something funny and it will come to you in a flash. Diane

the flies should all look the same - more like a wasp

if not, it may be some other fly that got in there. You may not want to feed it to him if you aren't sure what it is.

I really wish the little Dude would eat them. Oh well, he surely loves his crix, drinks form the leaf (yeah! Luna NEVER lapped a leaf - it was always dripper, or shower for her)

How did you come up with Valentino?

They were all the same. And the wasp description is spot on. The ones yesterday were just hatching (emerging-whatever you might call it) so they weren't flying yet. When I went back later today he had eaten the flying one, too. He also grubbed down about 4 crickets and some phoenix grubs. He's looking really well. This time last week I was worried about him, but everything is fine now. Now I can concentrate on the new Nosy Be who is not cooperating with his acclimation. If I croak this one I'm giving up. Diane
