Suggestions for buying a boa...

gzyv15a Mar 10, 2006 06:38 PM

I'd like to buy a boa but so far most of the boa's i've seen are over 7ft and very thick. I'm looking for something in the range of 5-6ft and medium size width. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Yeah, Dumerils are good as well as Hog Island boas. If you want it to stay small get a male.

You really need to think about what you want, "I want to get a boa" can be really vague. add to that don't want it over 7' and that does trim the list down. Some questions for you:

Want a boa - why a boa?

is this your first snake or so you have experience and how much experience?

This one's a biggee - Are you prepared to make a long term commitment, these guys can and do live 20 years if properly cared for, my oldest is 17 years old and pushing 11 feet.

There are lots of subspecies that are smaller like most of the island species like hoggs island(sp) etc.

Are you looking for a colorful boa and what colors do you like, many morphs available along with lots of various colorations of normals. From black, white, red, yellow orange etc. and many colors in between.

How much you're willing to spend? You can find them as cheap as $100 ranging up to $10,000 and even more.

There is a thread below I would read. The title is "What's the smallest boa." Some of the boas that Chris Gilbert mentioned are Cay Caulker, Sobogae, Hogg Island, Nicaraguan, Sonoran. I would recommend a Nicaraguan or a Hogg Island. Both are very beautiful. Let us know what you choose.
