I haven't heard anything new.

Any hot rock will burn if it's malfuntioning. I might assume that the producers have tried to build them better due to their bad reputation. Either way, I use them in some of my enclosures as substrate heaters. They work great that way (burried in the substrate, perhaps a little exposed) with little to no risk to the animals.

What kind of substrate are you useing?

Of course substrate depends on the species, but for my leopard gecko, I use a packed dirt. It's easy to clean, not likely to be an impaction risk, and closely resembles what the gecko might live on if it were back in central Asia.
