Incubating at 82%, how long will it take them to hatch?!?

snakecharmed Jul 28, 2003 05:41 AM

In the past I have always incubated my beardie eggs at 84-85%, but I decided to incubate my current clutches at 82% (I was told that this would produce more females). Anyway, in the past, it only took around 59 days when incubated at 84% for the babies to hatch out. Now, 65 days have passed and these little buggers haven't even started to hatch yet! I know the babies are ok because I candled the eggs and they are moving around. How long can I expect to wait on these? I'm pretty anxious to see my new darlings and the extra wait is almost unbearable! I'm sure most of you understand, it's really exciting when they start hatching out! Thanks, Christy

Dragons are NOT temperature sexed like Leopard geckos are. It doesn't matter what temp they are incubated at. I usually incubate at 83 - 84 and have about 99% hatch rate. Depending on the species of both parents, incubation can vary quite a bit. If your on the 65 day mark, they should be very close. The longest I have ever had a clutch go was 71 days and one parent was a German giant.

My first clutch is on its 67th day and I am so excited. There are no signs of anything. It seems like I have read in a post on this forum that someone had a clutch that didn't hatch until after the 80 day mark??

On my previous post I accidentally hit enter before I finished writing my subjet. Sorry!!

67 days huh?! I know you are excited, I sure am! I can't stop checking on the eggs, I probably do so 3-4 times per day (I have a hovabator with a window so I don't have to disturb the eggs.) What temps are your eggs on? I can't wait for these guys to hatch, and in preperation I ordered 2000 small crickets that I now have ...but no babies! I guess I jumped the gun a bit, but I was expecting these little buggers to hatch out last week...the suspense is killing me! I have another clutch due to hatch next month, so I will be going through this all over again pretty soon. It's events like this that make life worth living, I don't think anything compares to watching a new life come into this world! Christy

Thank you soooo much for telling me that the temp doesn't effect the sex of the dragons, I had no idea! Someone locally who has been breeding dragons for years told me that it did effect the sex of the babies, so in an attempt to produce more females, I took his advise and lowered the temps. now I feel really stupid because I'm having to wait so long on these babies I will up the temps on my next clutches to 84 which is what I did in the past). I also have hognose snake eggs in the incubator at the same temps. I have also heard of some eggs taking 80 days, but I think the temps of those eggs are like 79-80, not really sure. The daddy to these is a sandfire, he's quite a looker, when he is fired up, he has bright orange legs, a yellow head, and purple bars. Mom is a pretty yellowish color (not really sure of her bloodlines, but she produces pretty babies). This is the first time that this male has been bred so I'm pretty excited to see what the babies look like. Thanks for the advise, it's greatly appreciated! Thanks, Christy
