New to Herp's - Any advice on a Cage???

mkco79 Mar 10, 2006 10:29 PM

Im going to be getting a BP late summer and he/she will probablly be my only one. Im not intending to to breed or anything like that. I was thinking about a normal glass enclosure like a 3ft to 4ft in length becauseof the versatility you have with a set up like that. I have also been looking into the bohaphile cages aswell butam afraid theres not a lot you can do as far as tweeking temps and humidity due to there limited access for adding internal components etc.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks to Tom for the help! Always nice to cross paths with good people!

I once remember when I said I'd probably only get one snake...

At any rate, you can just about whatever you want to a boaphile so don't worry about heat and humidity.

The only advice I would give is to get exactly what you want, especially since you only plan to keep one snake.

I agree with Chris. If you REALLY are only going to get one snake, get whatever you want. While not a Boaphile fan, I think your BP would do really well in one. There are many other choices. check out the caging and supply sections on KS. To start in the hobby nowadays you have a gazzillion options! Good luck. I would give Boaphile a good hard look though, their big deal is Boas/Pythons and their needs. Their cages would allow you to tweek any kind of conditions you'll neeed. I hear from folks that have them that.

They hold humidity well...
They hold heat well....
The black color has a calming effect for some snakes..
They clean out easily......
The drop down front makes it easy to put animals in more esily that cling to you......
They can lock(makes the people you live with more comfortable)LOL

Yeah its funny the more people i talk to its mostly about personal opinion. I mean as long as you are doing the basics and your herp isnt moveing across broken glass it seems like you'll be doing ok. One of the guys i talked to said he had issues with keeping his boa tank at a good humidity level and others swear by them. Im starting to see the light and i know what ever i decide it will be good.
What length do you think would fit best for a ball? some say 3 feet but then a lot of the cages that are popular are only like 30 inches long which is 6 inches shy. I have read so much that "most" balls prefer a smaller enclosure to a big one. You guys have any thoughts on that issue?

THanks,
Mike

If they have a secure hide spot 3' or even a 4' would be fine. The majority of the people who use the smaller enclosures/tubs for ball pythons do so mainly because they have a high enough number of them that they are doing so to save over all space.

as far as size goes...IMO I would think the longer the better...if you can buy a cage thats 4'..I'd say go for it...It can't hurt...and it all depends on what you have room for...if this is your "only" snake...then buy or make the best thing possible...
Hope this helps...
