Antegy Mar 11, 2006 03:59 PM

Hi everyone,

I just want to share a couple pics I took of my MBK using a new flash setup. Its really hard to show black on black well, but I think it looks great when it works...

Enjoy!

Thanks for looking,

I agree. Those are tough pictures to make look right, and you did it very well. I'm not as enthralled with these snakes as I am with many others, but your pictures are great.

You don't know what you're missing! To each their own! Those are great pics, Antegy.

That is one fine looking Mexican Milk. What's the size/age/etc. on that beauty? Was his bands all tangerine as a baby, or did the orange/tangerine develope on all the bands as he grew? Thanks in advance. You can see below that my 05 male has tangerine, but only on the first band behind the head, and also on the tail section.

Hey Steve that is a c.b. '03 male, about 27". I hope he gains some more length but maybe not too much. Eats good just a slow grower. He was exactly like yours when I got him, intense yellow mostly with the tangerine around the head and tail, but now he is all tangerine. The w.c. female I have is 30+ " but with a lot of gray flecking in the subdued yellow.(dirty) but a cool snake. I hope to breed them soon!

I think these snakes are pretty. I can't think of any snake that I dislike, certainly no kingsnake. I'm just not as excited by them as I am by many others. Is there something specific that I should know? I'm always open to learning.

Thanks,

Bill

No, I was just letting you know that they are great snakes for me. There are 2 old sayings around here; kingsnakes, you can't have just one, and don't keep more than you can expertly care for! Some of us keep many and some keep a few but I don't know many that just have one for very long! LOL! Keep up the good work!

I'm learning the truth of your two sayings about kingsnakes. I guess my interest in the mountain kings is the primary evidence, but I'm still interested in thayeri as well. I'm just moving slowly because I don't know where my limit is. I'm sure that I could keep more if I'd go to simpler caging systems, and the snakes may be just as happy and healthy in something simpler. I'm only five months into keeping them, so I have time to expand later.

These three are beautiful. I really like the first one, but all are great.

Your saying sums it up pretty good. I have 32 snakes but many are yearlings and not too difficult. My male bull has visited hell and has decided he likes it, but my gophers are no trouble and even have manners! My cal kings give me the most finickyness, and my splendidas and holbrooki are great eaters, but not big socializers. I really like my Mex milk and thayeri because they show some personality. Most of my rat snakes are no problem and I especially like the attitudes of my Trans Pecos rats! Hard to beat hognoses for their "smiles"! LOL! I love the kings but there are many snakes that make good "pets". I got Matt's checkered holbrooki that is het for lavender Thursday, and as soon as she settles in, I'll get pics of her. She will blow your mind! She is a very sweet snake!

What is the top one on this post? I seem to remember that it is some kind of MSP thayeri, but I have problems distinguishing many of those southwestern snakes. (My memory is worse than my ability to identify snakes.) Both of these are beautiful animals.

I'm up only because I just fed my CalKing. I left an adult mouse and a pinkie mouse in his cage over an hour ago. He had been awake and moving around the cage just ten minutes before I introduced the mice, but when I put them in the cage, he didn't wake up to eat them. I finally decided that I'd sleep better knowing that he'd eaten, so I roused him and dangled the mice in front of him. He needed some time to negotiate the adult mouse. The pinkie he took quickly. Now, he's running around the cage looking for more. I wish I'd thawed another pinkie. He weighs 380 grams, and I just gave him 30 grams of mouse. I hope that will hold him for another week. Any thoughts?

Is "splendida" the name of the desert kings? There's a desert king in the pet store near my home. If the store owner ever gives up on selling snakes and gives them away on a rescue basis, I may try to save that guy. He's a neat little animal, but I'm just not attracted enough to buy him. I am worried for him. As far as I know, my CalKing is one of the only snakes that's ever left that shop alive. Both of their ball pythons died. Their milk snakes and some of their corns died. Maybe they sold one corn that lived. Their red-tail boa doesn't look good. Their gopher snake seems to be in absolutely perfect health. The desert king looks a little thin but otherwise okay. Their new CalKing seems okay so far.

Oh well, I better try to get some sleep.

Thanks,

Bill
