greens - prep and stuff

earhtmother Mar 11, 2006 04:05 PM

Well the boys DEFINATELY prefer romaine over any other greens tried so far. Collards were a big NO and endive and mustard were a VERY definate MAYBE. We did the frozen mixed veggies when we first got them and that was a maybe too, although now that we are a couple of salad freaks we might retry these. So anyone else find there were specific greens that were liked or disliked? My main question is has anyone tried pre-chopping their greens and if so how do you keep them fresh and how long do they last like this? We are going away for a few days and my mother(71) is going to be giving the boys their "salad" so I am trying to make it as easy as possible for her..it would also be handy for those days when I have worked a 12-14 shift and really don't feel like spending all that time doing the chopping thing as soon as I walk through the door.

Thanks
Elaine

I tear up food for ~23 lizards for a week all at once. Leaves get washed and broken into what would be bite-sized pieces for humans just so it's easier to disburse into individual cages. The containers are closed and refrigerated, supplements may be added on top with cold water added and then shaken to mix everything up. Keeps for a good week and a half but I use mine all in one.

i cut things up daily but i was just commenting that my malis for the longest time prefered only bok choy, however, now hugo is venturing out and seems to like escarole better than bok choy now but he still eats both. helga is still a choy head.

Mine all definitely pick out the dandelion greens first. I cut up a weeks worth of mixed greens and seal them in a "Vegetable" Ziploc bag. They will last over a week like this in the fridge.

I would choose a green or mix of greens with more nutritional value than what Romaine lettuce has to offer.

Here is a link to the popularly recommended Food Chart. This chart will give you the nutritional values for certain greens and veggies. I hope it helps you provide a nice balanced diet for your loved ones.

how much of that list can i feed my uromastyx

You should feed a variety. I think Doug Dix has some good recommendations on his website regarding which foods are best. I think most of the foods on the list say whether they are staple foods or not.
