New gecko owner, have some questions.

krapylet Jul 28, 2003 07:48 AM

Hi, we recently got two leopard geckos, near 3 weeks old. So I was wondering if there is anything we should be on the lookout for, when they shouldn't be handled, and generally, helpful advice. We already own a cali kingsnake and two tarantulas, so we have a little experience. Thanks in advance.

Little leo's can be a little frisky. If they let you handle them without skirming to much or making noise at you then that ok. Just try not to stress them to much. Leo's are pretty laid back. Dont worry to much about it.

baby leos HATE being touched generally, they hiss and frighten themselves to no end, so i would just let them be other than feeding them, misting their humid hide, changing their water, and changing their cage. they will calm down as they get older so don't worry.
the leos will be fine provided they have a good home setup for them and are getting well gutloaded and appropriatly sized mealies and small crickets. what is your setup like??

Try hand feeding your leos. I read that this builds up trust between you and your leo. Don't forget that the crickets should smaller than your leos head and gutloaded and dusted with D3 and/or Calcium. You could try putting your crickets in a leo-sized container and keeping a log of how much they eat to see if they're healthy or not. -jasalamandre

Couldn't hand feeding them also make them think every time they're in your hand, it's feeding time?
They weren't at all interested in mealies, and only slightly more interested in crickets, but they didn't eat those either. Maybe they're just shy in their new environment.
We've got relatively small cages at the moment, and since reptiles are sort of illegal here it's hard to find good hides and waterbowls, etc. But they have a hide and waterbowl each, and are in separate cages. They haven't hissed or anything, one of them keeps crawling up to my shoulders, even goes to sleep there, and the other one pretty much seems comfy with anything.
Thanks for your replies, though I'd still like some general tips, if there are any.
Take care.

My babies Boo and Popeye were quite highstrung, and easily frightened. They would freak if I even walked by their cage at first, and then gradually they got used to things. I actually found it a good thing for them to associate me or my fiance with food. I made them braver, and they slowly learned not to be so afraid of our hands. We made sure they had eaten before putting our hand totally in the cage, if they were hungry they tended to stalk our fingers. Just keep working at it, just remember to take it slow. Boo and Popeye recognize us, and will come out of hiding now. It probaly has more to do with the crickets than us, but Boo trusts us enough now to climb up on our hands. This is just my experience, I am by no means experienced. This is my first time raising babies, so I am learning as I go. Hope this helps you. Feel free to ask me any other questions you have, I may not be able to answer them all but I will try. Good Luck.
