African Soft Furred Rats

Herpquest Mar 12, 2006 05:13 AM

The African rats referred to below are Praomys Natalensis i.e. Multimammate Rats. They have been bred in the U.K. and Europe for a number of years. They have up to 24 teats and regularly produce litters of 20 or more young. Eric Davies

I've always been under the impression that they were. And not just in California either, I'm talking about importing them to anywhere in the entire United States.

When I made enquiries about the possibility of shipping some over from the UK to the States a couple of years ago,I was given to understand that the African Soft Furred Rat was a banned species in the U.S.A. Either the rules have been relaxed or?????

The importation from outside the US is still banned. However it is my understanding that when the ban went into place you were able to apply to the CDC for a request to keep said animals under the ban if they were submitted to quarantine and proven to be multi-generational within the US.

Is there some kind of website I can look that up on? Where can I find the laws? When did the ban go into effect? Is paper work needed to verify that you don't have smuggled animals?

I've always thought that it would be nice to have a colony of those but had pretty much accepted that I'd never be able to have any due to the fact that they were illegle. But if there are some regulations that allow it, it might be worth while looking into.
