Anyone using sterilite, rubbermaid or other platic containers to house adult pits?

I usually raise mine in them and then move them to a larger cage like a 45 gallon aquarium or a Boaphile cage. However I just scored some 74 quart Sterilite containers that would be suitable for many adult Pits. I think big when it comes to Pits and caging. I think it is best for them. Tom Stevens

Tom...........what are the dimensions on those Sterilite 74 quart boxes? Sterilite used to make a 48 quart box in their clearview series. The dimensions were 35" x 16 3/4" x 6". I sure wish they hadn't discontinued that model. They are a very space efficient size for snakes up to 5 feet. I keep my adult breeders(jani and northern pines) in 4 foot Boaphiles. I like looking at my big pines laying out with the cabinet light on.

I built this rack for these huge boxes. I know they're about 18 inches wide. The aquarium below is a 45 gallon and you can see these boxes are even longer than that cage. I got mine at target. That is a great looking Jani. ttyl Tom Stevens

I had found some Sterilite Model #1996, 44L X 19 3/4W X 6 3/8H at Walmart and Target, was just curious if they would provide adequate room.

Gave wrong info and dimensions, correct info and dimensions are Sterilite model # 1865, 90 QT, 34 7/8 X 16 ¾ X 13.
Thanks.

Without much sloping of the sides and very sturdily built. The bottom foot print is 36"x18" the top is 40" something. I'm checking them out for Black Milks which are not as robust as most of your Pits.

The ARS cages guys said they are thinking of putting together a large commercial rack for the larger Colubrids. I saw them at the Hamburg P.A. show and they were very nice.

The largest tub, suitable for reptiles, I have found are the VE Series tubs found at ReptileTubs.com, measuring 52 7/8"L x 20 7/8"W x 14 1/16"H www.reptiletubs.com.
Personally, I only use tubs for neonate and juvenile specimens..

Good luck,

Jeff

How do you incorporate those VE175 Tubs? They are huge. A rack system of some kind?

epidemic Mar 14, 2006 09:39 AM

The D. m rubidus are doing great. Two of my females have already produced good eggs this year and my mottled female should begin oviposition at any time now.
I only use the tubs for feeding purposes, as all of my enclosures are custom made, but I would imagine you could easily build a rack to contain them for use as enclosures, since they really aren't that tall.

Good luck,

check out the CB75, it actually has more surface area because it's wider and almost as long, and it costs less. I'm planning on building racks to house 9 pits, and I'm leaning towards the CB75 myself. Any feedback would be appreciated since I haven't committed to either yet. I do like the quality of the Iris tubs and appreciate that they are made in the USA.
CB75 - 814 sq in $15.00
CB110 - 780 sq in $18.00

Whats funny is that 6 foot Pine loves that size box. Just like my Sonorans like the long one only 2 cans wide....both snakes will fit their entire bodies in them when they want too. They're easy to replace when they get wet and dirty, so my snake room looks like an aisle at the super market. Kinda makes you hungry being in there LOL. Shoot me an email and let me know how you're doing TomsSnakes@gmail.com

Most of my young adult or adult pits are housed in containers from The Container Store. The dimensions are something like 34 x 6 1/2 x18. However, my adult ghost bull is in one the same size except for his is 12 in. high.

I do have old style Rubbermaids, from the early 90's, in two homemade racks, that I keep younger ones in.
