Feeding progress

kiknskreem Mar 12, 2006 02:19 PM

In my determination to avoid problems later, I am only offerng my female Jungle rats. I bought her two weeks ago, offered p/k and live a week later, she did not respond at all. Last night I offered her live, and she constricted it, attempted to eat it, and stopped halfway through when she couldn't get it down. Very disappointing. Today I tried a slightly smaller rat, also constricted, but not eaten. Guess I'll just have to wait her out. She is about 4 feet plus.

at four feet the snake may have already made up it's mind about rats. My big girl will kill anything I put in her cage, or constrict frozen thawed rather, but will never eat a rat. It's fairly common for them to do this but good luck.

I don't think that will be the case. She actually tried eating the first rat, but it was too thick. I have trouble getting small rats. Since then she's been very active, cruising arounds at nights now, hopefully there'll be a smaller rat when I attempt to feed her again on friday.

My IJ carpets will both refuse rats. When it got to 5 mice a week, I tried the female on small rabbits, which she loves. It gave her a big growth spurt. Take it to the vet to make sure there aren't any physical problems. A 4' carpet can eat a medium sized rat w/no problems.

If you have no luck after a couple more tries, you might consider scenting it with mouse. I raise both rats and mice and I just roll the rat around in the mouse wood shavings substrate to stink it up real good and then offer it to the JCP. After a couple weeks of that they usually take it without scenting. Nice looking JCP!
Good luck,
Kirk
