Need some tips on sexing corns

reptile_man7mm Mar 12, 2006 07:47 PM

Ive always kept corns.. but i have never attempted to probe one..

I know its not medical or rocket science.. but ive always been scared to try it..

I have heard that a long slender tail usually means a male.. and a shorter fatter tipped tail female.. is there any truth to this??

thanks

Mike

You basically can sex adults by the taper of the tail. Starting at the vent, to the tip. Males stay thicker more evenly taper. Females go from fat at the vent to skinny really fast, dramatically. Look on the net. There are a lot of good pics out there that show examples. My breeder friend says you can tell by the looks on young snakes too, but I just don't see it. Good luck.

I agree, the tail taper method is definitely the easiest.

You may want to start by buying them a drink though .

At what age/length would you say the tail taper is accurate?

I can not tell before a year old, but each person is different. My breeder friend can tell as babies with pretty good accuracy. Over 2 years is easy.

>>Tail sexing can be ok but it isn't always that accurate.
I had a nice amel that had all the indications of a male.
Even when held next to males of the same size, if anything his tail was longer.
Well, when I sold him I got a call a few months later that "she" was pregnant.
So do what I did,
I got a set of probes from Kathy Love at Corn Utopia.
Along with probes, she sent very good instructions on how to probe.
I was a little nervous at first so I practiced on a couple of yearlings that had already been sexed.
Don't worry, corns are tough little critters. After a while the only problem you will have with probing will be the occasional musk....or worse...lol

YUCk.lol
My gold tegu almost got me good once when I was sexing him right before I sold him. I had just looked directly at his preanal pores, and then rotated him slightly. Just as I did, it was like something out of a fire hose. Got my shoulder, hair a little, and covered the wall and window blinds. I am so greatful I finished sexing him like a split second before!!! It would have been a bulls eye, on his part had it been timed a second earlier.
