I finally got a uro!

shyguy4217 Jul 28, 2003 09:26 AM

I have been waiting and researching for so long and I finally got one! This past Saturday I purchased a Mali Uromastyx from a reptile specialty store He (or she) seems to be in great shape, I am taking him to the vet tommorow to make sure he's healthy. I haven't thought of a name yet, the person at the store said that hes probably around a year old, he is C.B. so thats good, and he seems fairly calm. The first day I brought him home he ate a couple mealworms, and the next day he ate some mustard greens and carrots, and today I offered him turnip greens and carrots but he preffered to pick out just the carrots

I have a question though, when you say peas are good to acclimate are you talking canned or frozen or what? Also I've read that younger uros need more wet food in their diet, is that just hatchlings or is 1 year old still to young to offer a dry mix of like birdseed, lentils, split peas, and dry iguana food.

Thanks and sorry for such a long post I'm just so exited
I'll try and post some pics soon.

Welcome, new uro owner I also own a Mali uro, they're great.
The peas people here talk about are frozen peas. Apparently, the canned peas have a high salt content which is not good for uros. As for iguana food, I've found that my uro eats them fine (he or she crunches them) and he/she is almost a year old. If you're worried about the firmness of the iggy food, you could soak the pellets in water for a few minutes to soften them up first before giving them to your uro. It allows for variety and adds extra water to the diet.

Congratulations on your new pet

Well thats great news! I have a mali uromastyx as well, hes not to old I dont think, and I've alwas given him Gourmet Budgie premium seedsm, fruits and vegs, Fortified with tropican egg granules, and greens. He loves the bord seed, and since it is pack with allot of good stuff I dont mind him eating. I think that Malis are better then most because of there differnt attudes.
Well good luck with your new uro!!!
