Look into roughneck monitors or ackies. You should know that any monitor will require a lot of time and patience to become handleable, so don't expect a walk in the park. Also, each lizard will have its own personality so its possible that it will never want to be handled.

hands down the Acanthurus Monitors (Ackies).

perfect sized, captive bred, hearty, personable, easy to cage, and a great pet or breeding project. nothing else really comes close.

check out more Ackie info at our site, be sure to check both the FAQ and Caresheet sections for lots of monitor info.

Hands down Black throat monitor. I love my 35lb 5 foot big baby and so do my kids. But you must have the space and knowledge to properly care for them. Do your "research" before you even think about getting one of these. They need and deserve the best care in order to live a happy healthy life.

Heres a hybrid albig that Ive raised from a 2 month old hatchling, Sobek, shes now just over 4 years old, shes 6ft 4 inches long and only 31 lbs. I just weighed her with a digital scale after calibrating it, I tried this 3 times to get a consistent reading.

This guy here is a WT a good friend has, I helped set his cage up, design his care, diet, etc over the years. Hes a sweetheart but territorial, he was barely 11 inches long when we got him. Hes is now 5ft 6 inches, and 22lbs, thats with a full stomach of 2-3 large rats.

This picture was taken with me holding him well over a year ago, he was 5ft long then and 18lbs.

This is a very heavy built stocky male BT/WT cross, he was 4ft 1.5 inches long and 11.5 lbs in the picture.

Heres a 4ft 6 inch Bosc monitor, he was only 10.5 lbs (thought Id add him for reference, they are lighter animals than albigs).

Albigs are very deceptively light, they spend alot of time in trees. Believe me, anyone whos ever picked up Sobek in recent history guesses 65-75lbs, but thats the illusion they give. Now a water monitor 5ft thats packing on weight may be 35lbs but then again they may not be that heavy either until they get a bit longer. Ive seen 5-7ft waters that were 35-60lbs.
I stopped many years ago trying to guess their weights, every time I was way off.

Weight and length were just an estimate,,, close though. I stopped measuring and weighing "Black"(monitors name)about a year ago. I will measure and weigh later for the exact size and send a pic. I Was basically just giving my 2cents about a great breed for a pet monitor. I have always loved seeing pics of Sobek, she is a beautiful BT.

People over my male, hes 4ft with a foot or so of tail missing, he is very difficult, and dangerous to handle at all, measuring him is a risk. I try to leave him alone, hes happier that way.
Sobek on the other hand is so much easier to deal with, she seems to enjoy human contact with those she knows.
They do feel very heavy if you estimate though..

I have crossed a V. flavirufus with an U. millii and the result turned out to be an incredable pet; great feeding responce, reasonable size, tame, beautiful ect ect... I strongly recomend them!!!

pretty good work on the paint shop job. A lil work around the toes for the shadowing, a lil more blending on the back of the two colors, and I'd almost beleive it!

Ackies are great and will teach you a lot. As much as I've enjoyed mine (almost a year old now), I can't say he's exactly nuts about being handled. He regularly bites me and is lightning fast, too. I realize it's a monitor forum, but the Argentine tegus are excellent choices if you want a good sized, relatively handleable lizard. I have 2 now and neither is frightened of me. They eat almost anything I offer, even some fruits. Look up some info on them if you like. I don't reccommend the tegu forum, though. Not usually a lot of posting going on there. Just a thought.
