Breeding!!!

turtlesami Jul 28, 2003 09:29 AM

Ok, I know how much I am not supposed to do this because of the danger to cosmo, my little girl. But I had to. Yesterday my dad and I were cutting the grass when all of a sudden he almost gets a turtle....it was the same exact color, size, shape. As my turtle! So I brought him in and placed him in a dish with water and food. His head came out and it was a red earred slider! But we dont live by a lake or river or pond...and it was one of the hottest and sunniest days ever. So I brought him in, cleaned him up, and he was very clean, in good shape, sooooo (i know what your thinking) I put him in my turtles tank. I had no other thing to do! He was going to die if he stayed outside. And I had no other thing to put him in, so thats all I could do. And guess what. They mated. I dont have anything I could put her in to lay eggs. So if she lays them in the water, And I remove them into an incubator, could they still hatch? By the way, Cosmo totally got snippy w/ the male. She finally bit his arm and went after him, so I had to remove him. And I thought that the best thing to do would be to set him free again. It was night time and the grass was soaked so I just let him be. I hope he's ok, and I hope he had a good time w/ food, water to swim and play in, and a pretty lady!

She may not lay her eggs in the water, she may become egg-bound and die. Get a plastic container like a sweater box and put some dirt in it for her. Of course, it will be awhile before she is ready to lay them anyway. I would destroy the eggs once they are layed, if you want babies, there are plenty of turtles that need adoption.

breeding a RES is like breeding mice....you may get stuck with all the offspring and not be able to find them good homes.

Do you feel bad eating an egg for breakfast? If not, then you shouldn't feel bad about destroying the turtle eggs.

Odds are that if laid in the water, they will never hatch anyway....but you may waste lots of time and money trying to incubate them anyway.

I didnt want to breed her, but it's already been done and there is nothing I can do about it. I don't want her to die because she can't lay her eggs. PPlease give me some advice.
Oh and, is cooked corn good for them?
